Magic decks and cards for cartomagic
A good magic deck is a magician's main tool. At The Joker House we stock decks built specifically for cartomagic: standard decks perfect for forces and shuffles, gaff decks with trick cards (double-faced, blank, mirror, indices…), marked decks for mentalism and prediction, Svengali and Stripper decks for sure-fire forces, and premium decks with handling polished enough for pro-level sleight of hand.
Types of magic decks
- Standard magic decks: the Bicycle Rider Back is the worldwide reference. Almost every manual (Royal Road to Card Magic, Card College, Expert at the Card Table) and every video tutorial assumes this deck.
- Gaff decks: full decks of trick cards — double-faced, fully blank, half-blank, mirror, short-index, long-and-short. Essential for packet tricks and longer routines.
- Marked decks: decks with an invisible or subtle code on the back showing the card's value and suit. Magicians read it from a meter away — enables predictions, mind reading and impossible reveals.
- Stripper decks: one card or the whole deck is beveled so any chosen card can be located by touch. The classic "find the lady" trick.
- Svengali decks: a trick deck with alternating long and short cards that lets the spectator "freely choose" the same card every time. Beginner classic that still hits with audiences.
- Magician-themed decks: editions designed or signed by Dynamo, Shin Lim, Daniel Madison, Ellusionist or Theory11.
How to choose your magic deck
Three criteria, in order of importance:
- Style of magic. Classic parlor cartomagic → Bicycle Rider Back. Mentalism and prediction → marked deck. Modern visual magic for YouTube/social → Theory11 Monarchs or Madison Erdnase. Children's magic → a basic Svengali deck.
- Marking language. A marked deck's code may be in English (As/King/Queen/Jack) or Spanish. Check before buying — an English-marked deck is unreadable to Spanish-speaking audiences but easier to source.
- Handling and finish. If you do many faros, false cuts, false shuffles and passes, look for a magic finish (Theory11) that respects perfect faro. For beginners, any Bicycle works.

Frequently asked questions about magic decks
Which deck is used in pro cartomagic?
The red Bicycle Rider Back in poker size. It's the only deck practically every classical magic manual is written for, and the audience associates it with "a regular deck". If you do tabletop magic, use it 80% of the time.
Is selling marked decks legal?
Yes. They're professional material for mentalism, stage and magic. Made explicitly for theatrical and educational use, not for cheating in games of chance. Major brands sell them openly and they're used on TV.
Do I need a different deck for each trick?
No. A Bicycle Rider Back covers hundreds of classical tricks without any gimmick. You only need a gaff or marked deck for specific tricks that require trick cards or back reading.
Do you sell magic books or only decks?
Our focus is the deck, but we also stock decks shipped with instructions (PDF or video) for the trick. Looking for a specific book? Drop us a line via contact.
What's a Svengali deck?
A trick deck where cards are alternately cut at two lengths (long and short) and half the deck shows the same forced card. It guarantees the same "choice" every time. Classic introductory trick.
Minimum age to start cartomagic?
From 8–9 years old, basic forces and tricks are within reach. Below that, hands tend to be too small to comfortably hold a deck. There's no upper limit — top magicians keep learning into their 70s.
