Bicycle: playing cards since 1885

Bicycle is a brand of playing cards manufactured in the United States by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) since 1885. It is probably the most recognizable playing-card brand in the world: the red or blue Rider Back appears in films, on amateur poker tables and in practically every card-magic manual written in the last century. At The Joker House we carry the standard lines, the plastic versions and various limited editions.

Best-known Bicycle lines

  • Bicycle Rider Back: the classic deck with the rider back. Red or blue. Paper with Air-Cushion finish. The default choice for magic and casual play.
  • Bicycle Standard: similar to the Rider Back with small back variations.
  • Bicycle Prestige: 100% plastic. Water-resistant, lasts between 50 and 100 times longer than a paper one. A common choice for poker clubs.
  • Bicycle Dragon Back, Bicycle Maiden Back and other back variations for collecting.
  • Special editions: anniversaries, themed editions, collaborations with artists. Some are limited runs.

How to choose your Bicycle deck

  1. To start in magic: red Bicycle Rider Back. It is the deck with which practically every classic card-magic manual was written.
  2. For frequent games at home: Bicycle Rider Back or Standard. It costs little and holds up over several games.
  3. For poker clubs or intensive use: Bicycle Prestige (100% plastic). A larger initial investment but lasts for years.
  4. For collecting: limited editions and series with foiling, especially discontinued ones.

Frequently asked questions about Bicycle

Are Bicycle decks 100% plastic?

No, the Bicycle Standard and Rider Back are paper with a plastic finish (Air-Cushion). Only the Bicycle Prestige line is 100% PVC plastic, which is what is used in competitive play.

How long does a paper Bicycle last?

In intensive use (long games every day) they last between 3 and 6 hours before the corners start to bend. In casual use they hold up for weeks or months.

Why is the Rider Back the "official" deck of card magic?

By historical convention. The first modern card-magic encyclopedias (Royal Road to Card Magic, Card College, etc.) are written assuming this deck, and most video tutorials still use it.

Is there a difference between the red and blue Bicycle?

Only the colour of the back. The paper, the finish and the size are identical. Some magicians have both for routines that require two visually distinct decks.
