Bicycle is the most recognizable playing card brand on the planet. It has been made since 1885 by Russell & Morgan Printing of Cincinnati, a company that in 1894 reorganized as USPCC (United States Playing Card Company). If you have ever seen someone do a card trick in an American film, the deck was most likely a Bicycle. If you have learned poker with a deck, also.

About Bicycle: the world standard deck

The Rider Back design (reference #63) was introduced in 1887 and is still produced unchanged since. You know it even if you don't realize: the winged cyclist on a decorative red or blue background. It is the most printed back in the history of modern playing cards. USPCC has produced more than 80 different backs under the Bicycle brand, but Rider Back still defines the category.

The other technical leg of Bicycle is the Air Cushion finish, a fine texture applied to the card surface since the early 20th century. It reduces friction when shuffling, mixing and opening fans, and it's what makes cards "fly" off the hand without sticking. It's the same finish shared by other USPCC brands like Bee, Tally-Ho or the premium Theory11.

If you are interested in technical card handling, our complete cardistry guide and the dictionary of 30 tricks are good next steps. If you come from magic, a standard Bicycle is the first deck recommended by almost any magician.

How to choose your Bicycle deck by skill level

Beginner

Recommended: Rider Back Standard red or blue

Anyone's first deck. It works for learning to shuffle, playing poker at home, doing the first cardistry movements and all classic magic tricks. The price is accessible and the feel is the reference against which any other deck will be compared.

Intermediate

Recommended: Stargazer, Black Dragon or Vintage

If you already have the fundamentals down and look for a Bicycle with its own personality for video or display, the themed (Stargazer, Constellation) and the dark ones (Black Dragon, Black Tiger) are the natural next step without leaving USPCC or the reasonable price.

Advanced and collector

Recommended: Reserve, 1885 and limited editions

For video production, performances or collecting, the Reserve and 1885 series offer the most careful stock within Bicycle. The limited collaborations (franchises, artists) are the medium-term collecting bet.

What makes the Air Cushion finish special

The Air Cushion finish is a texture applied to the surface of each card that creates microscopic air pockets when shuffling. That reduces friction between cards and allows them to separate cleanly in springs, fans and spreads. Without it, cards would stick and all cardistry would be impossible. It's the technology that made USPCC the world standard and the reason Bicycle is still the first deck recommended for learning any card technique.

Frequently asked questions about Bicycle

Which Bicycle deck is the "real" one?

The Bicycle Rider Back Standard (reference #808) in its red or blue version is the universal deck people refer to when they say "Bicycle". Produced without substantial changes since 1887, it's the deck people learn any card technique with worldwide.

Are Bicycle and USPCC the same?

Bicycle is a brand of USPCC (United States Playing Card Company). USPCC also makes Bee, Tally-Ho, Aviator and produces decks for other brands like Theory11, NOC or Ellusionist. Bicycle is the group's main brand and the public face of the company.

Why is it called "Bicycle" if they are cards?

The name comes from the original 1887 Rider Back design, which shows a winged cyclist. In the 19th century the bicycle was a symbol of modernity and movement, and it was used as a commercial icon. The name stayed even though nobody today associates the brand with bicycles.

Are Bicycle decks good for professional cardistry?

Yes. Almost any professional cardist learns and keeps part of their practice with Bicycle Standard. For high-level videos and performances they usually move up to specific decks (Virtuoso, Fontaine, NOC, Theory11) that have more visually striking backs in motion, but Bicycle's technical base is valid for everything.

How long does a Bicycle deck last?

In normal home poker use, years. In intensive cardistry or magic practice, between 1 and 3 months before it loses part of the Air Cushion finish and starts to "clump" (cards sticking). Exact duration depends on how much the user's hands sweat, the environment and practice frequency.
