Which fingerboard to buy for your level

Wooden or plastic fingerboard: what changes

They look alike from the outside, but a wooden fingerboard and a plastic one ride differently. These are the parts that make the difference.

The deck: wood, plies and width

Wooden decks are made by pressing thin veneers in a mould that gives the concave and kicks their shape. Blackriver and Berlinwood use five plies (Blackriver specifies Canadian maple) and press, cut and sand them by hand in Germany. They are 98 mm long. Width ranges from 29 to 36 mm depending on the model: Blackriver calls the 32 mm deck Wide and the 33.3 mm deck X-Wide. 32 mm is the most common size and the one usually recommended to start with; wider decks give bigger fingers more surface.

Trucks and bushings

The trucks on a wooden fingerboard copy those on a skateboard: baseplate, kingpin, pivot cup, hanger, axle and lock nuts. Between the baseplate and the hanger sit the bushings, rubbers that decide how much the board turns: soft ones turn more and give less stability, hard ones the opposite. The truck width must match the deck width (29, 32 or 34 mm); for a 33.3 mm X-Wide, 34 mm trucks fit.

Bearing wheels

The wheels on a professional fingerboard have bearings inside, so they spin freely and do not slow you down. The material changes the feel: hard plastic wheels, such as Blackriver's Blank Street (POM), are smooth and slide; urethane wheels grip more.

Foam grip tape

Instead of sandpaper grip, wooden fingerboards use a self-adhesive sheet of foam rubber. The pre-cut Riptape Classic is the brand's roughest-feeling grip.

Fingerboard brands

Blackriver

Founded in 1999 by carpenter Martin Ehrenberger in Schwarzenbach an der Saale (Bavaria). It makes wooden decks, trucks, wheels and ramps, and organises the Fast Fingers championship.

Berlinwood

Started in Berlin in 2002 by Timo Lieben and now part of Blackriver. Handmade five-ply decks, with the nose slightly longer than the tail, like a skateboard.

Bollie and Yellowood

Bollie is the entry-level line in the Blackriver catalogue: five-ply decks, metal trucks and bearing wheels. From Yellowood we have decks with dyed plies, such as the YW Blue, with riptape and stickers.

Tech Deck

The toy fingerboard that made fingerboarding popular in the late nineties. Plastic and metal, 96 mm and recommended from age 6.

Ramps, rails and obstacles

Fingerboards: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Tech Deck and a professional fingerboard?

A Tech Deck is a 96 mm toy fingerboard made of plastic and metal. A professional fingerboard has a pressed wooden deck with concave, trucks with bushings like a skateboard and bearing wheels. You notice it most in ollie control and in how well the board rolls.

Which fingerboard width should I choose?

To start, 32 mm, the most common size. If you have big fingers or want more surface, a 33.3 mm X-Wide or a 34 mm deck. What matters is that the trucks are the same width as the deck.

A complete or part by part?

For your first wooden fingerboard, a complete: everything is designed to fit together. Building it from parts makes sense once you know what feel you want from trucks, wheels or grip.

How often should the grip tape be replaced?

When the area where your fingers rest goes smooth and stops gripping. It is the part that wears out first, and you replace it by peeling off the old one and sticking on a new sheet trimmed to the deck.

Are there fingerboard competitions?

Yes. The best known is Fast Fingers, the world championship organised by Blackriver in Germany.
