This category holds the magic playing cards and magic decks of cards we have in our Madrid warehouse: working decks designed for magicians, marked decks, assortments of gaff cards (trick cards), decks for left-handers and editions from well-known magicians. They work whether you are learning your first card tricks or already perform card magic for an audience.

We do not reveal secrets: each deck states which effects it allows, and those that come with instructions or a video say so on their product page. If you are just starting out, the guide below will help you choose where to begin.

Which magic deck of cards to buy

To start: a regular deck

Many card tricks are done with an ungaffed deck, and it should look like the one anyone has at home. The red Bicycle Rider Back and the Tally-Ho Circle Back are the usual choices. The Bicycle Experts Thin Crushed is thinner, so its 54 cards take up the space of 52 regular ones, and it has a traditional cut, the one preferred for the faro shuffle. If you are left-handed, the Bicycle Ultimate Lefty has the indices in the opposite corners and includes video routines.

Working decks for magicians

Decks designed by and for magicians. The Phoenix by Card-Shark is printed by USPCC, has discreet one-way markings and comes from the factory in an order that makes it easy to reach Juan Tamariz's stack; the Phoenix Vibrant series adds large indices and bright colours. The Passport Project has a different flag on each back and can be set in Mnemonica order.

Marked decks

They allow mind-reading effects, predictions or finding a card without looking at it. The Butterfly Marked by Ondřej Pšenička, printed by Cartamundi, includes instructions and over two hours of video; there is also the Butterfly Seasons in an autumn edition. Other options: the King and Legacy Gold, the Knights by Ellusionist, the Jerry's Nugget Atomic Red or the NOC Pro 2021.

Gaff cards (trick cards)

Cards that do not exist in a regular deck: double backers, double facers or blank faces, among others. They are used for specific tricks. The practical thing is for them to match your deck: the Tally-Ho Gaff goes with the Circle and Fan backs, the Jerry's Nugget Gaff with Jerry's Nugget decks, the Copag Gaff I with the Copag 310, the Superior Gaff Set with the Superior Classic and the Butterfly Gaff Pack with the black and gold Butterfly decks.

Coloured decks and visual effects

Coloured backs allow colour changes and revelations that cannot be done with a red or blue deck. Bicycle has gold, green, orange or grey backs, and several include special cards. The Bicycle Spectrum, created by Cosmo Solano, has each back in a different colour and forms a rainbow when spread; the Tally-Ho Spectrum version comes from the factory in Si Stebbins order. And for a revelation with pictures, My Rebus is a complete trick with a special deck and an explanatory video.

What to look for in a magic deck

It should look ordinary

In close-up magic you want the audience not to pay attention to the deck. That is why many magicians work with classic Bicycle or Tally-Ho backs and keep designer decks for when the design itself is part of the trick.

Stock, finish and cut

Thin, pressed (crushed) stock makes the deck more flexible and easier to handle. The traditional cut leaves the edge of the cards so that the faro shuffle comes out more easily, which is why many decks for magicians mention it. Linen finishes, such as Cartamundi's True Linen B9 on the Dynamo Abandoned Luxury, aim for the cards to glide evenly.

Factory orders

Some decks come in a set order or ready for a known stack, such as Si Stebbins or Juan Tamariz's Mnemonica. If you work with a stacked deck, it saves you setup time.

Winner of America's Got Talent in 2018 with card magic. The Regalia White is printed by Cartamundi, with gold foil and a B9 finish.

Dynamo

The British magician has his personal deck here, the Abandoned Luxury in the Royal Ivy edition, in sapphire blue and gold.

Derren Brown

The British mentalist signs the Derren Brown deck with theory11, in green and gold, designed to look like an antique book.

Lennart Green

The Swedish magician, a card magic specialist, is honoured in the Heath Back Lennart Green Edition, printed by USPCC.

Bicycle and Tally-Ho

The two classic brands of the United States Playing Card Company, on the market since 1885. They are the classic decks for learning card magic, and many gaff cards are made with their backs.

Phoenix

Card-Shark's line for magicians: working decks with a factory order, one-way markings and large indices.

Butterfly

Marked decks by Ondřej Pšenička printed by Cartamundi, with their own system explained in the instructions.

Ellusionist

Magic decks: frequently asked questions

What playing cards do magicians use?

Many use Bicycle and Tally-Ho, because they look like an ordinary deck and it is easy to find gaff cards with the same back. For specific work they add marked decks or working decks such as the Phoenix.

What is a trick deck?

It is a general name for any deck prepared for an effect: marked decks, decks with gaff cards or decks in a special order. Each one serves a type of trick and is explained by its maker.

What is a gaff card?

A card that does not exist in a regular deck, such as a card with two backs, two faces or a blank face. They are sold in assortments to combine with the deck of the same brand.

What is a marked deck?

A deck that lets the magician identify the cards without seeing their faces. It is used for mentalism and prediction effects. On each product page we state whether it includes instructions or a video.

Do magic decks come with instructions?

It depends. Marked decks and complete tricks, such as Butterfly, Ultimate Lefty or My Rebus, include instructions or a video. An ungaffed working deck does not need them.

Can I play card games with a magic deck?

With ungaffed working decks, yes. Gaff cards, marked decks and coloured-back decks are designed for magic only.

Are there magic decks for left-handers?

Yes: the Bicycle Ultimate Lefty, in red and in blue, has the indices in the opposite corners and is designed for left-handed magicians.
