Description
The QiYi Kong Ming Lock Hexagonal Gem takes the traditional mechanic of the Chinese Kong Ming locks and moves it to a hexagonal gem-like shape. The result is a compact puzzle with presence, in which the faces fit together like the facets of a cut stone. It is a shape different from the usual ones, moving away from cubic burr puzzles and giving it a more decorative air.
The idea is the one of the whole series: separate the pieces following the order imposed by their geometry and, afterwards, find the correct sequence to return the piece to its initial state. The first time it is disassembled it often gives the impression of having "broken" it, and that is where the real challenge starts, because reassembling it forces you to notice details that went unnoticed before. Once solved once, the process becomes more methodical and satisfying.
QiYi maintains here the level of finish it has accustomed its speedcube customers to. The pieces are carefully moulded, fit without excessive tolerances and the whole thing feels solid in the hand. It is not magnetic nor does it aim to be: the hold between pieces depends solely on how they are cut, something faithful to the spirit of the original wooden Kong Ming Lock puzzles.
The hexagonal shape makes it more interesting as a visual object than a classic burr puzzle. It looks good on a shelf, works as a curious gift and serves as a friendly introduction to the world of traditional Chinese mechanical puzzles, without assuming the recipient is already a puzzle enthusiast. Its size is manageable with both hands, without being so small that pieces get lost when disassembling it.
As a practical tip, the first solve is more enjoyable if approached without haste. Often the order of disassembly is the most informative part of the process, so it is worth paying attention to which piece comes out first and which others need to move a little for it to come out. After two or three attempts, the mechanism stops seeming arbitrary and the underlying logic appears.
