Unusual cubes and shape mods: everything that is not a normal cube

This is the most entertaining corner of the catalogue: 32 puzzles that turn in ways a 3x3 cannot, from €3.99 to €99.99. These are the cubes people pick up off a shelf without meaning to, and by some distance the ones that work best as gifts.

A shape mod is a cube whose shape has been changed without changing its mechanism: inside it is still a 3x3 or a 2x2, but outside it is a pyramid, a barrel or an animal. Scramble it and it stops looking like a cube at all, which is the whole point. The brands here are QiYi (17 models), MoYu, SengSo, Ziina and ShengShou.

Big cubes: 8x8, 9x9 and 10x10

Past the 7x7 the WCA regulates nothing, so these belong to collectors and to patience. The MoYu MeiLong 10x10 V2, ball-core and magnetic, is the top of our range. A 10x10 is not solved quickly; it is solved with an afternoon set aside. If you want the competition sizes, they are in 7x7 and below.

Clock puzzles

The Clock does not turn: you work pins and wheels until the nine dials on each face all point to twelve. It is an official WCA event and it resembles nothing else. We stock the QiYi magnetic Clock plus unusual variants like the pentagonal SengSo Pentagram Clock and the SengSo Clock 5x5.

Gear puzzles

Gear puzzles carry visible cogs that make several faces move when you turn one. The QiYi Gear Sphere, the Crazy Gear Cube and the Gear Barrel are the most eye-catching, and solving them takes a completely different logic from a classic cube.

Mirror blocks

All gold or all silver, no colours: here you sort by piece size, not by colour. Scrambled, it becomes a lopsided sculpture, and making it cubic again is the solve. The SengSo Mirror Q-Platypus and the DianSheng Mirror Skewbs are the favourites.

Classic shape mods and fidgets

Which one to pick as a gift

That is the most common use for this category, so here it is plainly:

  1. For someone who cannot solve a cube: an Ivy or a Pyraminx. Both go down in minutes with a bit of intuition, and that hooks people. A 3x3 without knowing the method only frustrates.
  2. For someone who already solves the 3x3: a Mirror or a Gear. It forces them to think from scratch, which is exactly what they are after.
  3. For shelf presence: an 8x8 or a 10x10. Solved, it is an object. Scrambled, it is a conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Are these harder than a 3x3?

It depends on the puzzle. The Ivy and the Pyraminx are considerably easier. Mirror blocks are a 3x3 in disguise: if you can solve a 3x3 you can solve a Mirror, you just struggle to tell the pieces apart. Gear puzzles and Clocks have their own logic and have to be learned from zero.

Can you compete with a shape mod?

Skewb, Pyraminx, Megaminx and Clock are official WCA events. Mirror blocks, gear puzzles and big cubes above 7x7 are not: they are for enjoying, not for timing.

How long does a 10x10 take?

Far longer than a 3x3, and that is the appeal. Reduction methods turn a big cube into a giant 3x3, but the sheer number of pieces makes the first solve a matter of hours.

What exactly is a Void cube?

A 3x3 with no centre pieces, so you can see straight through it. It solves like a normal 3x3 except for a parity case that does not exist on the classic one, and that catches everybody out the first time.
