Which cube should you buy?

This is the question we get most through the contact form, so here is the short version.

  1. You have never solved one. Get a beginner 3x3 under €10. The QiYi Warrior S is our usual pick: it turns well out of the box, survives the learning curve, and it does not hurt if it ends up in a drawer. Start in 3x3 cubes.
  2. You can solve it and want faster times. This is where magnets earn their keep. A mid-range magnetic such as the MoYu RS3M or the QiYi Warrior M UV snaps into place on every quarter turn and kills the overshoots that cost you tenths. Roughly €12-25.
  3. You compete, or you intend to. High end, adjustable core, tunable magnets: the GAN V100 family or MoYu's top tier. From €45 up. At this level you set tension, elasticity and magnet strength by hand.

Buying a gift instead? Look at sets and bundles. A stepped pack like the MoYu MeiLong 2x2+3x3+4x4+5x5 solves the problem without having to guess the exact model.

The kinds of cube you will find here

Cubing goes well beyond the classic 3x3. The WCA, which governs official competition, recognises seventeen events, and most of those puzzles are in this catalogue.

  • Classic NxN: from 2x2 to 7x7. The bigger the cube, the slower and bulkier the solve; 3x3 is the headline event and 2x2 the quickest.
  • Non-NxN: Megaminx (a twelve-faced dodecahedron), Pyraminx (a tetrahedron, and the most rewarding one to learn) and Skewb (it turns around corners, not layers).
  • Shape mods and unusual cubes: gears, mirror blocks, Ivy, Fisher, Windmill and shapes that should not work. They live in other cubes and they make the best gifts and shelf pieces.

Magnetic or non-magnetic?

A magnetic cube has small magnets embedded in the pieces so each layer aligns itself at the end of a turn. You notice it immediately: the cube sounds different, it stops dead, and it is less forgiving of half turns. You do not need magnets to learn. You do want them to get under a minute. Almost everything mid-range and above in our catalogue is magnetic.

Stickerless or stickered?

Stickerless cubes carry the colour in the plastic itself, so nothing peels or wears out. It is what nearly everyone uses today. Stickers still make sense if you like the classic black body or want custom colour schemes, but they will lift eventually. When in doubt, go stickerless.

What do «UV coated» and «ball-core» mean?

A UV coating gives the pieces a slightly satin feel that glides better and picks up less grime. A ball-core is a spherical core that lets you adjust elasticity as well as tension, and it is largely what separates a good cube from a competition one.

YuXin

Excellent value, especially in 2x2 and in the more playful ball-shaped mods.

Honest mid-range. The MGC Elite 4x4 and the MGC 6x6 are very solid big-cube options without flagship prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Rubik's cube for a beginner?

How much does a good Rubik's cube cost?

Between €12 and €25 buys a mid-range magnetic that will last you years. Under €10 is beginner territory; above €45 is competition gear.

Do I need to lubricate my cube?

Not strictly. Mid-range and high-end cubes ship lubricated from the factory and stay that way for months. With use the turning gets drier, and that is when a drop of silicone lube brings the smoothness back. We do not currently stock lubricants, so we are not going to sell you one we do not have.

Which cubes are used in competition?

Any cube that meets WCA regulations, which mainly rule out markings that would give an advantage. In practice almost everyone competes on magnetic models from GAN, MoYu or QiYi.

Do cubes make good gifts?

They do, and it is one of the most common reasons people buy here in December. If you do not know the recipient's level, a multi-size bundle or a striking shape mod is a safe bet.
