2x2 cubes: the one everybody underestimates

«The 2x2 is the easy one.» Everyone says it and it is only half true. Fewer pieces, yes, but it is the fastest event in the WCA: the best solvers finish in under two seconds, which means there is no time to think while you turn. You plan the whole solve before you start and then execute from memory.

Three reasons to buy a 2x2

  1. As a second cube. If you already solve the 3x3, the 2x2 will take you an afternoon and give you a completely different feeling: here it is all speed and anticipation.

Magnetic, on a 2x2?

Yes, and it matters here more than anywhere. Because the cube is so fast, a single overshoot ruins the whole solve, and magnets are exactly what prevents it. The QiYi Warrior 2x2 M UV, the MoYu MeiLong 2x2 M and the YJ MGC 2x2 M are all magnetic and none of them passes €15. It is some of the best value in the entire catalogue.

YuXin's shape mods: cow, penguin and mouse

This is the oddity of the category and one of the things people like most about the shop. YuXin makes 2x2s shaped like animals and balls: a cow, a penguin, a mouse, a basketball, a baseball. Inside they are an ordinary 2x2 and they solve the same way, but scrambled they look like an impossible object. If you want a gift that does not look like «another cube», this is the aisle. Frequently asked questions about 2x2 cubes

Is it easier than the 3x3?

To learn, yes: if you can solve a 3x3 you are most of the way there, because a 2x2 is a 3x3 without edges or centres. To do quickly, no: getting under five seconds is far more demanding than it looks.

How many combinations does it have?

3,674,160. That sounds enormous until you compare it with the 43 quintillion of a 3x3. Any position can be solved in 11 moves or fewer.

Can I compete with one?

Yes, 2x2 is an official WCA event. Any of the magnetic models in this category is perfectly good to start competing with.

Which one should I buy for a child?

A stickerless model under €8, without magnets. At that age what matters is that it does not catch and that nothing is lost if it ends up under the sofa.
