Buy a Skewb: magnetic, beginner and variants

The Skewb looks like a Rubik's cube, but it does not turn by faces: it turns around the corners, on four axes that run through the cube from vertex to vertex. Each turn moves half the puzzle and affects all six faces at once. It has been an official WCA event since 2014. The QiYi QiCheng Skewb is a simple model, without magnets or stickers, designed to help you understand how this puzzle moves before spending more.

For competition: GAN Skewb M

The GAN Skewb M is 56 mm and has core-corner magnets that help each turn end in place. Spring tension and compression are adjusted separately, with 24 possible combinations.

For competition: X-Man Wingy V2 M

The QiYi X-Man Wingy Skewb V2 M is from X-Man, QiYi's high-end brand. It has slightly concave faces and five adjustment levels for magnet strength, tension and compression.

For collectors: Skewb variants

The DianSheng Mirror Skewb puzzles have all faces in the same colour and are solved by restoring the shape: in purple, pink and magnetic transparent yellow. The MoYu Skewb Mixup II has split centres that swap with a partial turn and the MoYu Maple Leaf Skewb has leaf-shaped centres that allow extra turns.

The ZePuzzles Domino Skewb combines the turns of a 2x2 and a Skewb in the same body, and it is intuitive. If you like corner-turning, the QiYi Ivy Cube, in the other cubes category, is a Skewb-based shape mod with leaf-shaped pieces.

What a Skewb is like

It has eight corners and six centres, and nothing else. Four corners are fixed to the core and the other four move freely. With so few pieces it is quick to learn, but the diagonal turning makes you forget your 3x3 reflexes: a single turn scrambles all six faces.

Magnetic or non-magnetic

To learn, a non-magnetic one is enough. For competition, the magnets in the GAN and the X-Man make turning more controlled and stop a corner being left halfway.

Adjustments

Both magnetic models let you adjust spring tension and compression. On the X-Man you can also change the magnet strength, with five positions.

The Skewb in competition

It was invented by Tony Durham and marketed by Uwe Mèffert, the man behind the Pyraminx, in the early eighties. The name Skewb was given by Douglas Hofstadter in his 1982 Scientific American column. It has been competed in the WCA since 2014, as an average of 5 solves. Only the normal Skewb is allowed in competition: mirror puzzles and shape mods are not, because the regulations require a uniform colour on each face. Is the Skewb hard?

It has far fewer pieces than a 3x3, so you learn it sooner. What takes some getting used to at first is the corner-turning.

Which Skewb should I buy to start?

The QiYi QiCheng, without magnets. If you already know you are going to time yourself, the GAN Skewb M or the X-Man Wingy V2 M.

What is the difference between the GAN Skewb M and the X-Man Wingy V2 M?

Both are magnetic and adjustable. The GAN adjusts tension and compression and has core-corner magnets; the X-Man has concave faces and also lets you adjust the magnet strength.

Is a Mirror Skewb a Skewb?

It turns the same way, but all faces are the same colour and the pieces have different sizes: it is solved by shape. It cannot be used in competition.

Are there bundles with a Skewb?

Yes: the QiYi pack with Megaminx, Skewb, Pyraminx and Mastermorphix, the QiYi bundle with Ivy Cube and the MoYu pack with Square-1.
