Which 7x7 cube to buy
To start: QiYi Warrior 7x7
The QiYi Warrior 7x7 is a non-magnetic 7x7 with a matte finish and no stickers. It is 62.5 mm and weighs about 135 g, so it handles almost like a 6x6. It is the easy way to try the format.
With stickers: QiYi Sail 7x7
The QiYi Sail 7x7 is QiYi's budget 7x7 in black plastic with stickers, without magnets. For those who prefer the look of the classic cube.
Competition: MoYu AoFu V5
The MoYu AoFu V5 7x7 Single-Track is the fifth generation of MoYu's competition 7x7: 144 magnets in the outer layers, 62 mm and about 143 g. It is a compact 7x7, the size of many 6x6 cubes.
Every size in one box
The MoYu MeiLong Bundle 6-Pack includes the six official cubes, from 2x2 to 7x7, with no magnets or stickers and with adjustable cores. It is a practical way to get the 7x7 and the sizes in between.
What sets the 7x7 apart from other big cubes
All big cubes, from 4x4 to 7x7, are solved by reduction: group the centres of each colour, pair the edges and finish like a 3x3. The 7x7 has the best of the odd cubes and the most laborious part of the large ones.
Fixed centre, like the 5x5
Each face of the 7x7 has 25 centre pieces and the middle one is attached to the core, so it sets the colour of the face. On even cubes (4x4 and 6x6) there is no fixed centre and you need to remember the colour scheme.
No OLL and PLL parity
The OLL and PLL parity of the 4x4 and 6x6 cannot happen on the 7x7. The only thing that can happen, as on the 5x5, is that one edge ends up flipped when pairing the last edges, and that is fixed with an algorithm before the 3x3 stage.
More pieces, more time
Where the 7x7 takes longest is the centres: you have to build 25 per face instead of the 9 on a 5x5. That is why, on a cube this size, a mechanism that does not lock up matters so much. Competition magnetic cubes are sold in Single-Track (magnets in the outer layers), Dual-Track (adds magnets in the core) and Triple-Track (adds inner magnets against pieces jumping) versions, each slightly heavier than the last.
Learning to solve the 7x7
Big cube algorithms use moves of several layers at once (Rw, 3Rw), explained in the Rubik's cube notation. What is the best 7x7 cube?
For competition, the MoYu AoFu V5, magnetic and compact. To try the format without spending much, the non-magnetic QiYi Warrior 7x7.
Is the 7x7 hard?
It does not require algorithms very different from the 5x5: the method is the same and there is no OLL and PLL parity. What it takes is patience, because building the centres takes much longer.
Do I need to know the 5x5 before the 7x7?
It is not essential, but it helps a lot. The steps are the same and on the 5x5 you learn them with fewer pieces.
How big is a 7x7 cube?
Current models are quite compact: the QiYi Warrior 7x7 is 62.5 mm and the MoYu AoFu V5 62 mm, almost the same as a 6x6.
Are there competitions for 8x8 or bigger cubes?
The official WCA NxN events go from 2x2 to 7x7. Larger cubes exist, but they do not have their own event.
Can I compete with these cubes?
Yes. WCA regulations allow magnets and require a uniform colour per face, and this applies both to the stickerless cubes and to the Sail with stickers.
