7x7 Cubes

The 7x7 cubes are the largest NxN size officially recognised by the WCA as a competition event. Being odd, they have a fixed middle layer (avoiding the typical parities of even NxN puzzles) but they surpass the 5x5 in piece count and reduction complexity. Average times are much longer than on small cubes and the mechanical build matters more than in smaller sizes, because any wrong tension shows up in every single turn.

Current 7x7 cubes measure between 65 and 70 mm. Magnetic models are the reference in competition, but there are also non-magnetic beginner options. Like the 6x6, it is not a first-purchase cube: it makes more sense once you handle mid-sized NxN comfortably. A useful way to scale up is to buy a multi-size pack.
