Megaminx
The Megaminx is a puzzle shaped like a dodecahedron, with 12 pentagonal faces, each holding 11 pieces (1 centre, 5 edges and 5 corners). It is an official WCA event and shares much of the 3x3's logic, especially on the last layer, adapted to pentagonal geometry. Many cubers learn it after the 3x3 because the basic algorithms transfer over with adjustments.
Modern Megaminx puzzles usually measure between 32 and 34 mm per edge and come in magnetic versions (more stable and faster) as well as non-magnetic beginner options. Stickerless versions carry the 12 colours in the plastic itself; stickered ones use adhesive stickers. The turning motion differs from a cubic NxN: you need to get used to the pentagonal axes.
It is common to pair the Megaminx with other non-NxN puzzles like the Pyraminx and the Skewb, also WCA events. As a base you always have the 3x3. For variants with different geometry, take a look at unusual cubes and shape-mods. Return to the Rubik's cubes hub for the full catalogue and to cubing accessories for timers and packs.
