The Megaminx is a dodecahedron: twelve pentagonal faces that turn like those of a Rubik's cube. It has been an official WCA event since 2003 and is the usual next step once you can solve the 3x3. In this category you will find the Megaminx puzzles we keep in our Madrid warehouse, from MoYu, QiYi and ShengShou: non-magnetic models to learn on, a magnetic Megaminx for timed solves and a shape variant for collectors. Which Megaminx to buy
To learn: a non-magnetic Megaminx
For your first dodecahedron, a model that turns without catching is enough. The MoYu MeiLong Megaminx is the budget option in the MeiLong line, without magnets. The QiYi QiHeng S2 is the second version of the QiHeng S, also without magnets.
To lower your times: a magnetic Megaminx
The MoYu MeiLong Megaminx M is the magnetic version of the same line, with light to medium strength. The magnets make each face settle on its own at the end of a turn, and on a puzzle with so many turns per solve you notice it.
To get the non-cubic WCA puzzles
If you want to try several at once, there are bundles that include a Megaminx: the QiYi 4-puzzle pack (Megaminx, Skewb, Pyraminx and Mastermorphix, stickerless), the QiYi bundle with Ivy Cube and the MoYu pack with Square-1.
For collectors: Phoenix
The ShengShou Phoenix is a shape mod of the Megaminx, in three colours, with face and edge turns. It has jumbling (pieces that change place) and bandaging (turns that lock). It is a different puzzle: it is not solved like a Megaminx and cannot be used in competition.
What a Megaminx is like
It has 12 centres, 30 edges and 20 corners. Each face has one centre, five edges and five corners, and each turn is a fifth of a rotation. That is 50 moving pieces, compared with 20 on a 3x3, and around 1068 possible positions.
Twelve colours
The standard Megaminx has a different colour on each face. There is also a six-colour version, with opposite faces in the same colour.
Magnetic or non-magnetic
To learn, either one works. If you can already solve it and want to time yourself, the magnetic one helps stop faces being left half-turned.
Stickerless
The colour is in the plastic itself. There are no stickers to peel or scratch.
The Megaminx in competition
The Megaminx joined the WCA at the 2003 championship in Toronto and is competed as an average of 5 solves. If you can solve the 3x3, you can start with it: it is solved layer by layer, with ideas similar to the cross and first layers of the cube, and the last face is finished with a few algorithms. Is the Megaminx hard to solve?
If you can already solve the 3x3, not really: the method is similar and what changes is the number of pieces. A solve takes quite a bit longer than on a cube.
Which Megaminx is best to start with?
A non-magnetic one such as the MoYu MeiLong or the QiYi QiHeng S2. If you plan to time yourself from the start, the MeiLong Megaminx M.
What is the difference between the MeiLong Megaminx and the MeiLong Megaminx M?
They are from the same MoYu line. The M has light to medium-strength magnets; the other has no magnets and is the most affordable option for learning.
Can I compete with these Megaminx puzzles?
With the MeiLong, the MeiLong M and the QiHeng S2, yes: they are standard Megaminx puzzles. The Phoenix cannot, because it is a different puzzle.
Is the Megaminx a Rubik's cube?
It is not a cube, it is a dodecahedron, but it works the same way: faces that turn and pieces you have to put back in place. That is why it is sold and competed alongside cubes.
Is it a good gift?
For someone who can already solve the 3x3, yes. For a complete beginner a 3x3 or a Pyraminx is better. You will find more ideas in which Rubik's cube to give as a gift.
