Pyraminx: the puzzle you learn in an afternoon

The Pyraminx is a four-faced tetrahedron and it is by a distance the easiest official WCA event to learn. It has four tips that turn on their own and a middle layer, and that is it. Someone who has never solved anything can crack it in an afternoon with a little intuition, and that is the appeal: it hooks people without frustrating them.

Beyond the standard Pyraminx

High-end magnetics. The SengSo YuFeng MagLev has a ball-core and magnetic levitation, the same technology as competition 3x3s.

Master Pyraminx. The ShengShou Master 4x4 adds another layer. It is to the Pyraminx what the 4x4 is to the 3x3.

Gear Pyraminx. With visible cogs, it turns in a completely different way.

Pyraminx Duo. A simplified version with just four corners and four centres, easier still.

Frequently asked questions

Is it easier than a Rubik's cube?

Considerably. A 3x3 requires you to learn a method; a Pyraminx can be reasoned out, and competition times sit under two seconds.

Is it a good first puzzle for a child?

Probably the best there is. The reward arrives quickly, and that is what makes them want to carry on.

Is a magnetic one worth it?

Only if you are going to time yourself. To learn and enjoy, any of the beginner models under €8 does the job.
