The Polaris Cube is a shape mod from MoYu (MFJS MeiLong range) based on the Skewb, the puzzle that turns around its corners. What sets it apart is that the corners also rotate on their own axis, and each face carries a star design that breaks apart when scrambled.

How it works

Before scrambling it, you need to rotate each corner by 60 degrees: only then can the Skewb mechanism move. The corners click into place at each 60-degree position, so they don’t spin freely during the solve, but the pieces have to be properly aligned for the puzzle to turn.

Design

It’s stickerless (no stickers: the colour is in the plastic itself) in bright colours. It measures 57 mm and weighs about 98 g. When scrambled, the stars on the faces break up and the puzzle looks very different from the original Skewb, which makes recognising the pieces harder.

Which level

It suits anyone who can already solve the Skewb: as well as placing the pieces, you have to return each corner to its orientation. It’s best to turn it gently, because some corners can pop out during very fast turns, although they usually snap back in.
