Hanayama is the Japanese company that turned the metal mechanical puzzle into an internationally recognised object. Tokyo-based and founded in 1933, its Cast Puzzle line was launched in 1983 by designer Nob Yoshigahara and has been a worldwide reference in metal puzzles for over four decades. Each Cast Puzzle ships with an official 1-6 difficulty scale and is designed by international puzzlists (Vesa Timonen, Oskar van Deventer, Bram Cohen, Jin-Hoo Ahn) who contribute pieces based on distinct mechanical principles.

Who is Hanayama? A Japanese company with almost a century of history

Hanayama was founded in Tokyo in 1933 as a board games and stationery company. In the second half of the 20th century it expanded into skill puzzles and, in 1983, launched the first Cast Puzzle series under the creative direction of legendary designer Nob Yoshigahara, considered one of the great names in puzzle history.

Since then, the Cast Puzzle line has become one of the most respected catalogues in the sector. New pieces enter every year in collaboration with international designers, and the brand keeps strict quality control on weight, plating and packaging, which explains why Hanayama puzzles are both mechanical toys and high-perceived-value gift items.

Hanayama difficulty levels 1-6: how they are assigned

Levels 1-2: introduction

Few-step solutions, meant to teach the basic Cast Puzzle mechanics. A good starting point for those who have never handled a metal puzzle or as a gift for older children.

Beginner

Levels 3-4: intermediate

Multi-step solutions with non-obvious moves. They usually take between 15 minutes and several hours depending on experience. The largest range in the catalogue and where most Cast Puzzles sit.

Intermediate

Levels 5-6: advanced

Long, multi-layered solutions. Built for those who have already solved lower-level puzzles. They can take days or weeks and are usually pieces signed by well-known designers.

Advanced

Cast Vortex, Cast Hourglass and other catalogue classics

The Hanayama catalogue features over 50 models active at any time. Some have remained classics for years: Cast Marble (level 3) is one of the best sellers for its compact design; Cast O'Gear (level 3) introduces gear mechanics; Cast Vortex (level 4) uses rotational symmetry; Cast Devil (level 5) requires a sequence of non-obvious moves; Cast Hourglass (level 6) is among the hardest the brand has ever released.

Puzzles are periodically refreshed: some old models go into limited editions and get reissued with new plating or have their classification revised internally. Collectors often hold complete sets of 30-40 pieces.

Hanayama designers: from Nob Yoshigahara to Vesa Timonen

The Cast Puzzle project was born under the direction of Nob Yoshigahara (1936-2004), a worldwide reference in puzzle design and author of several dozen patents. Since his passing, the brand works with an international designer panel: Vesa Timonen (Finland), Oskar van Deventer (Netherlands), Bram Cohen (United States), Jin-Hoo Ahn (Korea), among others.

Each designer brings distinct mechanical principles: Timonen is known for plate-and-rotation puzzles; Van Deventer for mechanisms that look impossible at first glance; Cohen, also the creator of BitTorrent, for mathematical puzzles. Each Cast Puzzle box names the designer, a useful hint about the kind of mechanic you will encounter.

How to choose your first Hanayama by level

Beginner (levels 1-2)

Recommended: Cast Coaster, Cast Star, Cast Square

Short solutions to get familiar with the "no force, no hidden trick" mechanics characteristic of Hanayama. They also work as gifts for anyone approaching metal puzzles for the first time.

Intermediate (levels 3-4)

Recommended: Cast Marble, Cast O'Gear, Cast Vortex

The core of the catalogue. Mechanic variety (rotation, gears, symmetry) and 15-minute to multi-hour solutions. Good starting point for anyone who has tried a metal puzzle before.

Advanced (levels 5-6)

Recommended: Cast Devil, Cast Spiral, Cast Hourglass

For those who have solved several level 3-4 puzzles and want a long challenge. They can take weeks and sometimes require re-reading the official hint several times. Collectible as well as playable.

Materials and manufacturing: metal cast, plating and packaging

Cast Puzzles are made by die casting in zamak metal, which allows for complex geometries with very tight tolerances. Each piece receives a specific plating: chrome, gold, matte nickel, black. That plating is not only aesthetic; it defines the touch and slip when manipulating the puzzle.

Packaging is one of the brand's most recognisable details: each Cast Puzzle ships in a box with minimal visual instructions and no written hints, which is part of the experience. Some limited editions include a certificate with the official difficulty and the designer's signature.

Frequently asked questions about Hanayama

What do Hanayama levels 1 to 6 mean?

They are an official difficulty scale assigned by the brand to each Cast Puzzle. 1 corresponds to very short solutions and 6 to puzzles that can take days or weeks. The scale is internal and only comparable between Cast Puzzles: a Hanayama level 6 cannot be compared directly to a puzzle from another brand.

Do Hanayama puzzles require force to solve?

No. The Hanayama philosophy is "no force, no trick": every puzzle is solved by finding the correct sequence of moves. If at any point you have to apply force, you are almost certainly jamming the puzzle rather than progressing.

Do they come with a solution?

The box does not include a printed solution. Hanayama publishes the official solution on its website and in catalogue leaflets, but most enthusiasts prefer to solve it themselves. Some models ship with a QR code to an official video.

Who designs Hanayama puzzles?

Originally Nob Yoshigahara, founder of the Cast Puzzle line in 1983. Since his passing the brand has worked with an international panel: Vesa Timonen, Oskar van Deventer, Bram Cohen, Jin-Hoo Ahn, among others. The box names the designer, which usually hints at the type of mechanic involved.
