Description
Cast Devil is a metal puzzle in the Huzzle series from Hanayama, the Japanese company known for its cast-metal puzzles. It is a reworking, by Nob Yoshigahara in 1994, of the Devil’s Claws, a very simple-looking puzzle that appeared in 1905, at the height of the early 20th-century craze for mechanical puzzles.

How it works
Like the rest of the Cast series, it is a disentanglement puzzle: the pieces are interlinked and the aim is to separate them and then return them to their starting position. There are no springs, magnets or hidden catches; everything depends on the shape of the pieces. Its smooth, understated outline is deceptive, and the maker itself warns that more than one person has given up on it out of sheer frustration.
Skill level
Hanayama rates it level 5, “Expert”, on its six-level scale. A good fit for anyone who has already solved a few intermediate Cast puzzles and wants a challenge that may take several sessions.
The designer
Nobuyuki “Nob” Yoshigahara (1936–2004) was one of Japan’s great popularisers of puzzles and designed or supervised many of the early models in the Huzzle series.
