The Cast Hook is a cast-metal puzzle from Hanayama’s Huzzle Cast series, designed by Finland’s Vesa Timonen. It consists of two exactly identical hook-shaped pieces, similar to those used for hanging things up, hooked onto each other. The challenge is to separate them and join them again.

Design

Its appeal lies in its simplicity: two identical pieces, with no hidden mechanisms or moving parts, that look easy to separate at first glance. It is a disentanglement puzzle, in which everything depends on finding the right path of one shape relative to the other. When they finally come apart, the sequence of moves feels almost elegant, and putting them back together is a second challenge, not a mere formality.

Vesa Timonen has designed several puzzles in the Hanayama catalogue, including the Keyhole and the Dial, and here he works with very clean geometry: the interest lies in the shape, not in the number of pieces.

What level it suits

Hanayama ranks its puzzles on a scale of 1 to 6, and the Hook sits at level 2, in the accessible part of the series. It is considered a good entry point for those starting out with metal puzzles or as a gift for someone with no previous experience, although it may take even experienced solvers a few attempts.
