Kendama Europe is a German kendama company based in Garching, near Munich, which describes itself as the first kendama company in Europe. It makes the Play, Record and Tensei series, plus strings, accessories and the Skip, a wooden skill toy. Here are the Kendama Europe models we have in stock and how to choose between them. Who Kendama Europe are
Kendama Europe GmbH was started in Germany by Marc Wibbels, a sports event organiser, and a group of friends who loved kendama. Since then it has built a team of riders, followed the Kendama World Cup in Hatsukaichi (Japan) closely and taken part in German and European championships. Its first major model was the PLAY Kendama, launched in 2011 in beech wood. The brand states that its products undergo laboratory testing and comply with European toy regulations (CE marking).
If this is your first contact with this Japanese toy, start with what is a kendama or the complete kendama guide, where we explain the parts: ken (handle), sarado (cups), tama (ball) and kensaki (spike).
Kendama Europe series we stock
Record Plus (Aqua Series)
The Plus shape is slightly larger than a standard kendama, with large cups that make catches, lunars and balances easier. Beech ken and tama, grippy Match Clear paint, micro bearing and a long string. The Aqua Series is a limited reissue of classic designs from the Record series.
IntermediateTensei Naturals
Tensei is the evolution of the Record series: large cups in two sizes, reinforced rims, a 62 mm tama with a deformable bevel (it settles onto the spike with use) and a micro bearing. The Naturals come without graphics, in beech or bamboo, with or without a finish.
AdvancedTensei Sumaze and Kiseki
The same Tensei shape with graphic designs. The Sumaze models are beech; the Kiseki combine a maple ken with an ash tama, and each model has a Japanese name: Akatsuki means dawn, Akari light, Tsuchi earth.
AdvancedFinishes: MC, GG or natural
The finish changes the feel a lot. MC (Match Clear) is a sticky clear paint that helps the tama stay still in balances. GG (Ghost Grip) is a very thin matte coating, with grip but no shine. Natural is unpainted wood: less grip and the feel of bare wood.
How to choose your Kendama Europe
Your first serious kendama
Recommended: Record Plus Splash MC, Record Plus Aloha MC, Record Plus Liquid Love MC
The large cups are more forgiving and the MC paint helps with your first balances. The brand designed it for ambitious players, but it is a good buy if you already know you enjoy kendama. Our guide which kendama to buy has more criteria.
Tensei shape without graphics
Recommended: Tensei beech natural, Tensei beech GG, Tensei bamboo natural
The brand's high-end shape in its plainest version. Choose natural if you prefer bare wood and GG if you want grip without stickiness. Bamboo is an unusual material for kendamas and gives it a different look.
Tensei with graphics
Recommended: Tensei Kiseki Akatsuki MC, Tensei Kiseki Tsuchi MC, Tensei Sumaze Mazura MC
For players who have mastered the basic tricks and want the Tensei shape with a design of its own. You will find ideas to progress in kendama tricks.
