Description

The QiYi Kong Ming Lock Tic Tac Toe is part of the classic series of Chinese mechanical puzzles inspired by the wooden locks attributed to Kong Ming. In this version, the piece takes the shape of the tic tac toe grid, a friendly nod to a game almost everyone knows, which here becomes a small three-dimensional challenge to work with the hands.

The mechanics are simple to state and somewhat more entertaining to solve: you have to separate the pieces one by one and then reassemble them until the puzzle looks as it did at the start. There are no turns or permutations like in a cube; the point is to understand the correct order of fit, something that combines observation, visual memory and a bit of patience. The first time it is disassembled it often creates a feeling of having "broken" it, and that is where the exercise really starts.

QiYi is known in the speedcubing world for its care in moulding and finishes. That same craft is applied here to a more traditional puzzle: the pieces fit with reasonable tolerances, the assembly feels firm once completed and the whole thing has a comfortable size to carry in a pocket or leave on the desk as a small everyday object.

It is a good entry point to the world of burr puzzles and the Kong Ming Lock variants, whether you are looking for a gift for someone curious or starting to collect pieces from this family. The learning curve is friendly: almost anyone can take it apart and enjoy the process of trying to put it back together, with no need for previous experience with mechanical puzzles or knowledge of the Chinese tradition behind it.

As a practical tip, the first time it is worth observing the whole assembly before starting to move pieces and, if possible, memorising visually the order in which they come out. Many enthusiasts of this series enjoy precisely the opposite process: letting someone else disassemble it and facing the reassembly from scratch, without having seen how it was put together.
