Lucky 7 is one of the first three decks in Midnight Cards’ SLOTS series, a project by Randy Butterfield and Mike Wilson that takes the symbols of old slot machines as its starting point. Each edition in the series is named after a fictional casino and revolves around a classic slot machine icon; in this case, the number 7.

Design

The back combines casino-style geometric patterns with symmetrical colour compositions. The tuck box, in matte paper, features gold and red foil details (metallic stamping), a slot machine as the main motif and the nine original symbols of these machines, with the 7 highlighted in gold; the inside of the tuck box is also printed with slot machine and suit motifs.

The court cards keep the traditional artwork, but recoloured to match the back and tuck box, with metallic gold ink and three Pantone colours (exact-match inks). The aces and jokers are customised in Butterfield’s style: the Ace of Spades has the feel of a Las Vegas sign and the jokers revolve around the slot machine.

Manufacturing

The series was printed by Expert Playing Card Company at its facilities in Taiwan, with its classic finish. The project was funded on Kickstarter in 2020; besides the regular edition, a short run of around 100 decks with edges dyed (gilding) in black, green and red was produced.
