Ball in the Cage is an assembly puzzle from QiYi based on a classic from the European tradition: twelve notched sticks cross to form a cage that traps a red ball. The aim is to get the ball out and then close the cage again with the ball inside.

What is a Luban lock?
Luban locks, also known as Kong Ming locks, are the Chinese version of burr puzzles: puzzles made of notched pieces that hold one another together without glue or screws. Tradition links them with the carpenter Lu Ban and with the strategist Zhuge Liang, known as Kongming, although there is no evidence that either of them invented them. Unlike a Rubik’s cube, nothing turns here: the pieces slide and come apart.
How it works
The only way to free the ball is to dismantle the cage, and the cage only opens by following a specific order of moves. Puzzle historians Jerry Slocum and Jack Botermans describe this design as an extension of the three-piece burr, the simplest form in the family. Putting it back together with the ball in the centre is usually the most painstaking part, because you have to understand how each stick rests on the others.
