Material and length

Kendama USA makes its strings from a tough nylon blend that tangles little and has a slight stretch. Each string is 53 cm long, the brand’s standard length: once fitted, it leaves about 4–5 fingers between the base cup and the bead, which is how players usually measure it. For those who prefer more slack, the brand sells 70 cm extra-long strings separately.

Changing the string

The tips come stiffened so they pass through the ken (the handle) and the sarado (the crosspiece with the side cups) without fraying. Each string has its own bead, the small piece knotted at the end so the string does not slip out of the hole.
