The Planets is a series by Vanda Playing Cards, David Goldklang’s publishing house, that devotes one deck to each planet of the solar system, starting with the one closest to the Sun. Uranus is the seventh instalment and was funded on Kickstarter in 2018. Every deck in the series is illustrated by the Serbian illustrator Srdjan Vidakovic (Widakk).

Design

Uranus takes its name from the Greek deity of the sky, and that link with the heavens gives the deck its theme: each of the twelve court cards is associated with a sign of the zodiac, which is worked into its clothing. The characters are creatures with feather-like gills on either side of the head. The style is retro, with an engraving-like line and a two-tone palette on a white background that keeps the cards easy to read. It includes its own Ace of Spades, custom suit symbols and exclusive jokers.

Manufacturing

The cards are printed by the United States Playing Card Company and the boxes by Clove St. Press. Two editions were made with the same cards and different boxes: the standard edition, of at least 2,000 units, with a black box, silver and white holographic foil (metallic stamping) and embossing; and the limited edition, of 500 units, with a dark blue box, gold and silver foil and a numbered seal.
