Off the Wall is a limited edition from Art of Play, the publisher run by Dan and Dave Buck, which often commissions its decks from illustrators and studios from outside the world of playing cards. In this case the design is by Studio Muti, a studio from South Africa, which set out to capture the rebellious spirit of 1980s Southern California skate and surf culture.

Design

Abstract shapes and intense colours dominate: blues, oranges and yellows combined with black. The back is borderless (the artwork runs right to the edge of the card), which shows especially when you fan or move the cards. The court cards have been completely redrawn and are larger than usual. The tuck box follows the same theme and features silver foil (metallic stamping) details.

Manufacturing

It was printed by the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) on thin card stock with an Air Cushion finish (a very fine embossing that helps the cards glide). This thin stock is often preferred for flourishing because the cards bend and fan easily.
