The QiYi Sail W is a revision of the Sail, one of QiYi’s simplest 3x3s. It came out in 2019 with two main changes: a reinforced mechanism so that pieces pop out less, and rounded centre caps that reduce catching when turning.

Mechanism

The reinforced mechanism aims to prevent pops, that is, a piece jumping out of the cube when a turn is forced, which is common with entry-level cubes before you’ve learnt to control your force. The rounded centre caps reduce catching, the slight snag that happens when one layer rubs against another that isn’t fully aligned. It has no magnets, so the layers don’t settle back into place on their own.

How it performs

User reviews agree on smooth, easy turning, although with little corner cutting (the ability to turn with the layers slightly misaligned) compared with today’s speedcubes. Some find it noisy and recommend lubricating it from time to time. It measures 56 mm, at the upper end of the standard 55–56 mm size, and weighs around 80 g.

What level is it for?

It works well as a first 3x3 for learning the beginner’s method or as a cube for modding and experimenting. To compete or bring your times down seriously, the usual step is to move on to a magnetic model.
