Blackjack is the world's most played casino game because it is the one where playing well truly matters: every decision — hit, stand, double, split — has a mathematically correct answer, first computed by Edward Thorp in 1962, and following it cuts the house edge below half a percent. The family is older than casinos: Cervantes was already writing about twenty-one card cheats in 1613, the French formalised vingt-et-un in the 18th century, and the American name came from a 1899-era bonus for the ace of spades with a black jack. At home, one player banks against the rest, the dealer draws to 16 and stands on 17, and blackjack pays 3 to 2.
