Gin rummy: the classic two-player duel, explained
How gin rummy works: ten cards, melds, knocking at ten or less deadwood, the undercut penalty and the discard mind-game. Born 1909, beloved ever since.
Gin rummy is the two-player card game distilled to its essence: ten cards, draw one, discard one, and a single repeated question — does this card bring me closer? Formalised in 1909 by whist teacher Elwood T. Baker at a Brooklyn club (his screenwriter son named it after the spirit), it exploded in 1930s-40s Hollywood, where Bogart and half the industry played it between takes. Its genius is the knock: you may end the hand only when your unmatched cards — the deadwood — total ten points or less, and if your opponent's hidden hand turns out equal or better, the undercut bonus punishes your haste.
