What it is

The Pyraminx, devised and patented by Uwe Mèffert in the early 1980s, is a tetrahedron with three layers per axis, four tips, four axial pieces beneath them and six edges; it has no centres. The tips turn on their own and the large layers move around four axes. The goal is to make each of the four faces a single colour.

How to learn it

It’s one of the quickest twisty puzzles to master: the beginner’s solution involves placing the tips and axial pieces first and then the six edges, with few sequences to memorise. That’s why it’s often recommended as a second puzzle after the 3x3 cube, or even as the first one for younger children. The Pyraminx is also one of the official events of the WCA, the association that organises speedcubing competitions.
