The YuXin Mouse 2x2 is a shape mod, a puzzle that keeps the mechanism of a 2x2 cube but changes its outer shape; in this case, into a mouse. It’s a large piece, around 138 mm tall, and belongs to YuXin’s animal series alongside the tiger, panda, penguin and rabbit.

How it works

Inside it turns like a 2x2: two layers per axis and eight pieces, all corners. The difference is on the outside. The pieces aren’t all the same shape, so as soon as it’s scrambled the mouse’s silhouette becomes distorted, and it only reappears when every piece is in its place and correctly oriented. Anyone who can solve a 2x2 can apply what they already know, although the figure makes recognising the pieces a different experience.

Design

It’s considerably larger than a normal 2x2 (roughly the height of two 3x3 cubes stacked), so you handle it more like a figure than a pocket cube. When solved, it works as a decorative object for a shelf or desk. Users describe smooth turning with decent corner cutting (the ability to turn even when the layers aren’t fully aligned). As with any 2x2, it’s best not to force a corner to twist on itself.

What level is it for?

It suits anyone who already solves the 2x2 and wants a visual variant, collectors of shape mods, and it makes a good gift for puzzle fans.
