The YuXin Cow 2x2 is a shape mod from YuXin’s animal series: a puzzle that keeps the mechanism of a 2x2 cube but with the shell moulded into the shape of a cow. As you turn it, the figure breaks apart, and the challenge is to restore it to its original shape.

How it works

A 2x2 has two layers per axis and eight pieces, all corners. In a shape mod those pieces have different shapes, so once it’s scrambled it isn’t enough to look at the colours: every piece has to end up in its place and correctly oriented for the head, body and patches to fit together again. Anyone who can solve a 2x2 can apply the same methods, although they’ll need to get used to recognising the pieces by their shape.

Design

YuXin’s animal figures tend to be considerably larger than a conventional 2x2 and also work as decorative objects when solved. As with any 2x2, it’s best not to force a corner to twist on itself, as a piece can break.

What level is it for?

It suits anyone who has already solved a 2x2 and wants a visual variant, collectors of shape mods, and it makes a good gift for puzzle fans. It isn’t a competition puzzle, but one for fun and display.
