The YJ MGC 2x2 is the magnetic two-layer cube with which YJ (YongJun) launched its MGC series, a range that brought magnets to moderately priced cubes. It measures 50 mm, weighs around 67 g and is stickerless: there are no stickers, the colour is in the plastic.

Mechanism

The magnets help each layer settle into alignment at the end of a turn, which reduces lock-ups during fast sequences. The magnetism feels relatively strong, and the turning is light and flexible. The tension (how tightly the layers are held together) can be adjusted using the internal springs and screws. One of its corners, the white, blue and orange one, is fixed to the core to anchor the mechanism: it must not be twisted on itself, as that would leave the cube unusable; on any 2x2 it’s best not to force the corners in that way.

What level is it for?

It suits both those moving up to their first magnetic 2x2 and those who practise every day and want a reliable cube. YJ later released newer versions in the series (MGC Elite and MGC Beta), so this model is the starting point of the family. Some users notice that the corner cutting (the ability to turn with the layers slightly misaligned) loses a little of its ease after months of heavy use.
