Klondike is the solitaire: seven columns building down in alternating colours, four foundations climbing from ace to king, and a stock of 24 cards that decides your fate one flip at a time. Named after the 1890s Yukon gold rush and made universal when Microsoft shipped it with Windows in 1990, it hides real strategy — uncovering hidden cards first, holding low cards back from the foundations, spending empty columns only on useful kings. Played well, roughly a third of draw-one deals can be won; the rest teach patience, which is the game's older European name.
