Poker's story is America's story told in cards. Born in New Orleans between 1810 and 1825 from European vying games — the French poque, the German pochen, the English brag; the romantic Persian as-nas theory has been dismantled by modern historians like David Parlett — it grew up on Mississippi steamboats with a 20-card deck, adopted the full 52 cards and the draw by mid-century, spread through Civil War camps, became Wild West legend (Wild Bill Hickok died holding aces and eights in 1876), and went public in Las Vegas. Then came the three sparks of the modern boom: the hole-card camera (1999), online poker (1998) and Chris Moneymaker turning an $86 satellite into the 2003 world title — before Black Friday 2011 reshaped the industry into today's regulated, solver-driven mind sport.
