Description
The 2x2 Gear Ball is the spherical version of QiYi’s 2x2 Gear Cube: the same gear mechanism, but in the shape of a ball. As on the cube, toothed wheels connect the pieces, so every turn drags the whole assembly along. This is the tiled version, with coloured plastic tiles instead of stickers.

How it works
The gears transmit the movement to all the pieces at once, so no turn happens in isolation. The aim is to return each colour to its area of the sphere. The rounded shape makes it harder than the cube: there are no visible edges or corners to help you get your bearings, and it is harder to tell which part is facing you.
Design
The tiles are coloured plastic plates fitted onto the surface, which stand up to use better than traditional stickers. The toothed wheels are visible between the pieces, so you can understand the mechanism just by turning it a few times. It is best handled without forcing: if you try to turn it off its axis, a piece can snap.
