Buy kendama online: the Japanese skill toy
The kendama is a traditional Japanese toy with over 300 years of history: a wooden handle (ken) with three cups and a spike, connected by a string to a perforated ball (tama). The challenge is to chain together increasingly complex tricks — from the basic "cup and spike" to the competition combos seen at the Kendama World Cup. At The Joker House we stock nearly 400 models, with very competitive prices for Spain and all professional brands: Sweets Kendamas, KROM, Kendama USA, Active Kendama, Royal Kendama, Kendama Europe and other recognized makers.
Types of kendama by skill level
- Beginner kendama: beech wood, no special paint. Perfect for the first tricks: cup, spike, around the world. Range €15–25.
- Pro kendama: selected wood (cherry, maple, walnut), "tacky" or "sticky" paint so the ball grips better in the cups. Range €35–60.
- Competition kendama: tama with cup grip, optimized weight and balance, specific cup profiles for advanced tricks. Brands like Sweets, KROM, Royal. Range €45–80.
- Special edition / pro model: collaborative editions with pro players or artists, premium materials (zebrawood, walnut), limited runs. Collectible and play. Range €60–150.
- Custom setup: many advanced players combine ken from one brand with tama from another. Loose pieces and customization parts available.
How to choose your kendama
- Never played: start with a €20–30 model from Sweets Kendamas (Focus or Prime), Active Kendama or KROM Pop. Good value, sturdy enough while you learn.
- Already play: step up to pro lines. Sweets Sticky, KROM Royal or Active Solid. Tacky paint completely changes the feel and unlocks balance tricks.
- For competition: most players combine ken and tama from different brands. Customizing the setup is normal practice.
- For gifting: a pro kendama with tacky paint in a striking color (pink, lime green, holographic) is a safe pick.
Basic tricks to start
The first tricks you'll want to learn: cup and spike (catch the ball on a cup, then on the spike), around the world (cycle through all three cups), lighthouse (balance the ball on the string with the ken upright), airplane (the ball spins and lands on the spike), lunar (similar to lighthouse but ball inverted). Free tutorials on YouTube — Sweets Kendamas, KROM Kendama and Bonz Atron channels are recommended for starters.

FAQ about kendamas
Is kendama hard to learn?
The first basic trick (cup and spike) is learned in an hour. Intermediate tricks (lighthouse, lunar, airplane) in a few weeks of daily practice. The good thing about kendama is there's always one more trick to learn — pros have decades in and keep adding combos.
Recommended minimum age?
From 7–8 years old with initial supervision. The string and ball can be a hazard for younger kids (face hits). No upper limit for adults — it's an excellent adult toy because of the focus it requires.
How long does a kendama last?
If you take care of it, years. The main wear part is the string (replace every 4–6 months with heavy use). The cups' tacky paint also wears with intensive use and can be restored with a specific spray. Replacement strings and accessories: strings & accessories.
What is "tacky" or "sticky" paint?
A special paint that adds a touch of friction so the ball "grips" better in the cups and on the spike. Especially noticeable in balance tricks (lighthouse, lunar, stilt). Pro standard since the mid-2010s.
Do you ship to the Canary Islands?
Yes — to Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla with proper customs documentation and applicable tax. Lead times are slightly longer but full service.
Difference between Sweets Prime and Sweets Sticky?
Prime has matte paint without tacky — cheaper, good to start. Sticky has pro tacky paint for greater grip — what serious players use. Switch to Sticky once you've nailed the basics.
