The YuXin Penguin 2x2 is a shape mod: a puzzle with the mechanism of a 2x2 cube and a shell moulded into the shape of a penguin. It’s around 125 mm tall and belongs to YuXin’s animal series, alongside the panda, tiger and mouse.

How it works

Inside it turns like a 2x2: two layers per axis and eight corner pieces. Because the pieces have different shapes, the penguin becomes distorted as soon as it’s scrambled and only reappears when every piece is in its place and correctly oriented. You solve it by shape more than by colour, although the methods are those of a normal 2x2.

Design

It’s stickerless: there are no stickers, the colour is in the plastic, so it stands up well to use. It’s clearly larger than a speed 2x2, so you handle it like a figure, and it looks good on a shelf or desk when solved. Users describe smooth turning and decent corner cutting (the ability to turn even when the layers aren’t fully aligned). As with any 2x2, it’s best not to force a corner to twist on itself.

It suits anyone who already solves the 2x2 and wants a visual variant, collectors of figures and shape mods, and it makes a good gift for puzzle fans.
