Siete y media: the Spanish ancestor of blackjack explained
Siete y media is Spain's Christmas banking game: draw cards without passing seven and a half, face cards count half a point, and ties favour the bank.
Siete y media («seven and a half») is Spain's Christmas card game and an elder cousin of blackjack, from the same 17th-century family of banking games that Cervantes was already writing about in 1613. One player banks against the rest; everyone draws cards trying to get close to seven and a half points without going over — number cards count face value, face cards half a point each, so the perfect hand is a seven plus a face card. Its most elegant rule has no blackjack equivalent: you may ask for a card a la muda, face down, so the bank never knows if your calm is seven and a half or two and a half. Ties go to the bank — the original house edge, three centuries before Las Vegas.
