This pack brings together the MeiLong 2x2 and the MeiLong 3x3, two of the most widespread budget cubes. They’re from MoYu’s MFJS (MoFang JiaoShi) line, in the standard non-magnetic version with a stickerless finish (no stickers: the colour is in the plastic itself).

What’s included

The 2x2 has two layers per side and only corners, so it’s quick to learn and serves as an introduction to the logic of cubes. The 3x3 is the classic cube and the basis of almost every solving method. Both are official events of the WCA, the association that organises speedcubing competitions.

What they’re like

As they have no magnets, the layers don’t settle into place on their own at the end of a turn and precision depends on the person using them; for learning, this isn’t usually a problem. Users say the 3x3 turns smoothly from the start, if a little stiffly, that it improves with lubricant, and that both are somewhat noisy. With no stickers, there’s nothing to peel off with careless handling.

Which level

They work as a first introduction to cubes, as a gift for someone who wants to learn, or as a way to add the 2x2 to a 3x3 you already know. If magnets appeal later on, the same series has magnetic M versions.
