This pack from MoYu’s MFJS line (MoFang JiaoShi, its budget range) brings together four official WCA events that aren’t NxN cubes: Pyraminx, Megaminx, Skewb and Square-1. Its distinctive feature is the “ghost” finish: coloured pieces with black carbon-fibre-effect stickers.

What’s included

The Pyraminx is a four-sided pyramid with tips that turn on their own. The Megaminx is a twelve-sided dodecahedron that extends the logic of the 3x3. The Skewb is cube-shaped and turns around four axes that run through its corners. The Square-1 changes shape as you turn it, because its layers are cut irregularly, and you have to return it to a cube shape before sorting out the colours.

The finish

The black carbon-fibre-textured stickers cover most of each piece and only let the colour of the plastic show at the edges. The result is a dark, uniform look; on the other hand, some users say the colours are harder to tell apart than on a stickerless finish (no stickers) when turning quickly.

Which level

It’s a non-magnetic set designed for learning. The Pyraminx and Skewb can be mastered with a few sequences; the Megaminx calls for more patience and the Square-1 is the most unusual of the four. It suits anyone who can already solve the 3x3 and wants to try all four events before investing in high-end models.
