How to Host a Poker Night at Home: Complete Kit Guide

Hosting a proper poker night: how many chips, which blinds, which deck, how to structure the game, and the small details that make it work.A well-organised poker night is one of the best things you can do on a Friday with friends. How many guests and how long it'll last The ideal number of players is between 6 and 8. With fewer than four the game loses its grace (lots of hands "stolen" from the button) and with more than nine the table slows down: hands take too long and people get bored between actions. On duration: Normal night: 3-4 hours. You need time for everyone to settle, play a few orbits, and have a final table with tension. Long night (serious tournament): 4-6 hours. Requires a properly designed blind structure with breaks. Quick night (light cash game): 2-3 hours. Each person joins when they want and leaves when they want. Notify guests a couple of days in advance and state the specific format: "$10 tournament at 9pm with light dinner included" is much clearer than "we'll play poker". If people know what to expect, they show up with their head in the game. Cash game vs. tournament: which to pick This is the first big decision. Both options work, but they play differently: Cash game Each chip equals real money. You buy chips for a value (say $20) and play with them. If you run out, you "rebuy" by buying more. When you want to leave, you cash out your chips at their value. Advantages: you join and leave when you want, the stakes are always "real" money for everyone involved, no elimination pressure. Drawbacks: someone can get knocked out financially without the night ending; someone can end up very relieved and someone else very deep in the hole. Tournament Each player pays a fixed buy-in (say $10) and receives a fixed amount of chips (say 5,000). Chips don't equal money directly: they're "points" to survive. People get eliminated, and at the end the top 1, 2 or 3 spots cash a prize. Advantages: everyone pays the same, losses are capped, there's a "story" with a beginning (everyone equal) and an end (one winner). Drawbacks: once eliminated, you sit watching or doing something else, which can break the evening if you bust out early. For a first poker night with friends, the tournament is almost always the better choice: the economic limit is clear, everyone gets the same opportunity, and the mechanic is more narrative. Cash game works better when everyone's a regular and clear on how far they want to take it. How many chips you need and what values A standard starter set has 300 chips distributed across four or five colours. It's just right for 6-8 players. If there'll be more of you, a 500-chip set gives more room (especially in tournament, because stacks get big in the final rounds). For 8 players that's 52,000 chips total, well covered by a 300-chip set distributed like this (160 whites + 120 reds + 40 blues + 16 greens = 336). If you don't want to complicate things, there's a rule of thumb: the starting stack should be between 100 and 150 times the starting big blind. If you're going to start with blinds 25/50, give each player 5,000-7,500 chips. That guarantees the first levels of the tournament have "real play" before blinds start to matter. Blind structure: the backbone of the tournament Blinds are forced bets that go up every so often to force tournament progression. If blinds never went up, a game could literally last days because careful players would never bust. Raising blinds is what forces action. If the night drags, you can also skip a level. To keep time, the easiest tool is a blinds app on the phone: Poker Blind Timer and similar are free, sound an alert when blinds rise, and save you from watching the clock. The other option is a regular timer and someone keeping an eye. The full kit: what you need at the table The minimum list for a proper poker night: One or two poker decks. Two is better than one because while one is in play, the other gets shuffled for the next hand and you save time between orbits. Quality matters: a Bicycle Standard, a Bee Stinger or a Tally-Ho are the absolute classics at any table. Cheap supermarket decks die in one long night: they lose snap, "open" badly and start marking. Chips: 300 for 6-8 players; 500 for 8-10. "Casino" weight chips (11.5g or more) feel right when stacked; cheap thin plastic ones weigh nothing and fly off with the slightest knock. Dealer button: comes with the chip set almost always. If not, a coin or any small agreed-upon object works. Blind buttons: two extra discs marking where the SB and BB are. Useful, not essential, especially in big tables where it's easy to lose track. A suitable table: any large table works if cards slide well. If you want to step it up, a felt mat (think tablecloth for a dining table) changes the feel a lot. Comfortable seating: a long session on hard stools turns into torture. Make sure you have good chairs. Timer or blinds app. Sheet with blind structure and prize list. Print a copy and leave it on the table: avoids arguments. Which deck to pick: and why it matters Lots of first-time hosts buy any deck from the supermarket "because for one night it doesn't matter". For the first hand, sure. By the time you've dealt 80 hands and you start noticing the edges giving, the cards marking, and two from the middle stuck together, it matters less. Plastic holds up to many more hands and is washable, but feels weird at first and is more expensive ($25-50 per deck). For home, good paper is more than enough. Prizes: how to split the pool In a small-buy-in tournament for 6-8 players, the fairest distribution is: 1st: 60% of total pool 2nd: 30% of total pool 3rd: 10% of total pool If only the winner cashes (winner-takes-all), the night becomes more exciting but also riskier for those who don't reach the final table. If you're 4 or 5 friends, single prize for first is simplest. If you're 8 or more, 60-30-10 so three cash is better. An alternative that works well in friend games: "bounty". Every time you eliminate a player, you take a small fixed amount of their buy-in (say $1 of the $10). The main prize shrinks but there's incentive to play aggressive throughout. Boosts the fun a lot. House rules: small decisions that prevent arguments Before starting, it's worth getting everyone aligned on these basic points. The rule is: whatever you decide is law, even if someone wants to change it mid-hand. Dealing: the dealer rotates with the button. Everyone shuffles and deals when their turn comes, or a "fixed dealer" (the host) deals always. Cards accidentally exposed: if a card is seen during dealing, the deck is shuffled and re-dealt (that hand doesn't count). Pre-agreement: is this accepted, or do you play on with the "marked" hand? String betting: in formal poker, you can't "trickle chips in" to gauge the opponent's reaction and then decide if you raise. The bet is what you put in in one motion. In a friendly game it's usually forgiven the first few times, but it's worth announcing: "I'm calling 100" before putting chips in. Verbal bets vs. chip bets: if you say "raise to 200" without chips in, that's your bet. You can't backtrack. Avoids "I'll bet 100... no, better 50". Misdeals: if the dealer deals incorrectly (wrong number of cards, wrong order, etc.), the hand is voided and the deck reshuffled. Applies before the flop completes. Showdown with no action: if two players reach the river without anyone betting, both must show to see who wins. No "you first". Talking about live hands: universal rule: if you're not in the hand, don't talk. No commentary about what others have, no advice, no reacting to cards. The most important rule for keeping the game fair. Put them on a sheet next to the blinds. If a question comes up mid-hand, you go to the sheet and nobody argues. Snacks and drinks: the silent trick The element that most affects the real duration of the evening is food. If everyone arrives hungry, the first hour goes to dinner and everything gets disorganised. If nobody eats, after two hours the table starts looking for excuses to stop. What works best, in this order: Light snacks on a coffee table before starting, while people arrive. Crisps, olives, cheese. 20-30 minutes. Light dinner before the first hand. Pizza, sandwiches, a board. Something that doesn't require plates and cutlery at the game table. Individual snacks at the table during play: nuts, popcorn, fruit. Things you can grab with one hand without staining. Non-alcoholic drinks always available: water, sodas. A poker night with alcohol flows well through the third round; from the fourth onwards mistakes and arguments start. Coffee for the long breaks. Keeps the night alert until the end. Avoid: any sauce, melted cheese, greasy food that ends up on the cards. Greasy cards become unpresentable and the game becomes uncomfortable. Typical first-time mistakes 1. Too many players Inviting 10-12 people because "more people, more party". The table grinds, people get bored, the night ends up being two badly organised tables. Better 6-8 confirmed. 2. Blinds that rise too slowly 30-40 minute levels in a home game: you reach the fifth level without having made a tough decision in your life. The night drags forever. Better 15-20 minute levels for a 3-4 hour total. 3. Stacks too small Dealing out 1,500 chips with starting blinds 25/50 means a couple of raises and people are already in danger. Starting stack should be at least 100 times the BB so the first levels are playable. 4. Changing rules midway "Let's add an ante now" or "let's raise the blinds because we're going slow". Any rule changed midway benefits some and hurts others, which creates resentment. Big decisions: before starting. 5. Not having change for rebuys (in cash game) If someone wants to rebuy and nobody has change, the game stops. Having change ready avoids the problem. 6. Ignoring the social factor Poker is a game, but the night is among friends. If someone's losing everything and being a good sport, don't press them too hard. If someone's being too serious, remind them it's for fun. The balance matters. Frequently asked questions How many chips do I need for a game of 8 players? A 300-chip set in 4-5 colours is just right for 6-8 players. If the plan is regular nights with more people, a 500-chip set gives more headroom for the final tournament stacks. Better tournament or cash game for a first night with friends? Tournament. In cash game, free rebuys at the same value or higher. In "freezeout" tournament there's no rebuy: bust = out. There are "rebuy" tournaments where during the first 60 minutes you can pay another buy-in and come back with a starting stack. Decide before starting and communicate clearly. Is it legal to host poker games at home with stakes? In most countries, private games among friends with no third-party profit are legal: what's banned is profit by a host (the house taking commission). If you as host don't take a percentage and everything wagered is distributed among the players, you're fine. As with everything, be reasonable with the amounts.
