Poker Table Positions: UTG, Button, Cutoff, Blinds Guide

Not every seat plays the same. Here's why turn order changes everything and how to pick hands based on where you sit.There's one thing about poker that's hard to grasp until you've lived it a few times at the table: not every seat plays the same way. The same hand — say K-J — can be a premium open from one spot and an automatic fold from another. Not because the cards changed, but because the order in which you act changed. In this article I'll walk you through, slowly, what "positions" are at a poker table, what they're called, which are good and which are bad, and why that largely decides which hands you should play. If you don't have the rules down yet, better start with how to play Texas Hold'em. Here we assume the basics — blinds, flop, turn, river — and go one level deeper. What we mean by "position" In poker, "position" isn't your physical seat: it's the order in which you act in each betting round. Because that order depends on where the dealer button is (and the button rotates one seat each hand), your "position" changes every hand. If you're in good position this hand, in five hands you'll be in bad position. So in the very short term it doesn't matter much, but in the long term you save or earn money depending on how well you handle each spot. The basic rule everything stems from is: the later you act, the better. Whoever acts last has seen what everyone else has done, and that's pure information gold. Whoever acts first is betting blind on others' reactions. That's why early positions are called "bad" and late positions "good", even though there's nothing inherently bad or good about a seat: just different amounts of available information. The positions, one by one How many positions you have depends on how many players are sitting at the table. We'll cover the fullest setup — nine players, called "full ring" — and then comment on how it changes for six-handed. Preflop: in order of action On the opening round (preflop), action starts with the player to the left of the big blind and goes around clockwise back to the big blind, who acts last. The positions, in that order, are: UTG (Under the Gun). The player immediately to the left of the big blind, first to act preflop. It's the earliest position and the toughest in the game: you have no information from anyone and there are still eight players to act behind you. Any hand you open from here has to be very strong because eight players can respond with full criterion. UTG+1. The next seat to the left. Marginally better than UTG: one more piece of information, but you still have seven behind you. UTG+2. Third seat to the left. Traditionally still considered "early position", though you have slightly more leeway. Lojack (LJ). A relatively new name (it appeared with the growth of online play); some manuals still call it MP1 or "middle position 1". You're starting to be in intermediate territory. Hijack (HJ). "Hijacker". Called this because when you open here with a raise, you usually force the cutoff and button to fold, "hijacking" their post-flop last position. It's the first late-position seat. Cutoff (CO). Immediately to the right of the button. Only one player (the button) acts after you in each post-flop round. Very good position. Button (BTN). "The button". The best seat at the table. You act last on every post-flop round (flop, turn, river). You have full information from all other players before deciding. Preflop you act second-to-last, just before the blinds. Small Blind (SB). You paid half the minimum bet without seeing your cards. Preflop you act second-to-last (after the button, before the BB). On post-flop rounds you act first, which is quite uncomfortable. Tough position. Big Blind (BB). You paid the minimum bet without seeing your cards. Preflop you have the "act last" advantage because you close the round with your bet already made. On post-flop rounds you act second, after the SB. Tough position post-flop but better than SB. Post-flop: the order changes From the flop on, the action order resets: it begins with the first active player to the left of the button. The blinds, who acted last preflop, act first post-flop. The button, who acted second-to-last preflop, acts last on every post-flop round. That's why the button is the best seat: on the three post-flop rounds — where the big pots move — you have total information on everyone else. The visual table layout To picture it all at once, here's how a nine-handed table looks with the button in a fixed spot: [UTG+1] [UTG] [UTG+2] [BB] [LJ] [SB] [HJ] [BTN] [CO] [→] The button rotates one seat clockwise each hand. In the long run that means everyone passes through every position equally: the bad balances the good. But each individual hand, position decides much of what's correct to play. Why information is everything Picture two identical hands. In both you have 8♥ 9♥ (a middling hand with flush and straight potential). The flop comes 6♥ 7♣ K♦. You have an open-ended straight draw (any 5 or 10 completes it) and nothing made yet. Case 1, UTG: You act first. If you bet, you have no idea what the others will do. If you check, someone could bet big and force you to decide blind. If you decide to bet to see, three players behind you could raise and force you to call big or fold. Bad spot. Case 2, on the button: You act last. Everyone else has shown their hand: two checked, one bet small. You know nobody likely has a monster, or they'd have bet more. You decide to call knowing you have one of the best hands to defend on boards like this, and that on the turn you'll be last to act again. Excellent spot. The hand is the same. Position changes everything. What to play from each position There are "standard" hand ranges that good players run from each position. They're not laws — poker doesn't work that way — but they're the foundation worth internalising before deviating from them. These ranges are reference for nine-handed no-limit Texas Hold'em; exact numbers vary with table style. Example: AKs = ace and king of the same suit. o = "offsuit" (different suits). Example: AKo = ace and king of different suits. 66+ = pair of sixes or any higher pair. "Broadway" = cards from 10 to ace (T, J, Q, K, A). "Suited connector" = two consecutive same-suit cards (87s, 76s, 65s). The button: why it's the most profitable seat at the table Statistically, over a long session, players win more chips from the button than from any other position. The reason is threefold: Post-flop information. You act last on flop, turn and river. Every decision you make is taken with everyone else's information on the table. Steal potential. If everyone folds to you, you can "steal" the blinds with a small raise because the two blinds have to decide without knowing your hand and statistically their ranges are weak. This is called a "steal" and serious players plan it carefully from the button. Wider hand range. You can open many more hands without losing money long-term because your post-flop information stops you getting trapped with marginal hands. One caveat: if both blinds are very aggressive players who defend constantly, the steal stops working and you have to tighten up. Position is an advantage, not immunity. The blinds: playing out of position is tough The two worst seats for post-flop play are the small blind and the big blind. The SB is probably the most expensive position in poker long-term: you start paying half a blind and you'll play every post-flop round first, with no information from anyone. The BB is somewhat better because you paid the full blind (you're already invested) and you act second post-flop, not first. That's why blinds play differently from other positions: SB: you raise a fairly narrow range when everyone folds to you (you can attempt a "steal vs BB"). If someone has already raised, you defend few hands and, when you do, usually with a re-raise (3-bet) to take initiative. BB: you defend many more hands because you already have 1 BB in, which improves your pot odds to call. But most of your defences will be calls, not raises: you resign yourself to playing post-flop with positional disadvantage, but at least you bought cheap. Six-handed tables: what changes The 6-handed format, also called shorthanded, is very popular online and increasingly in casinos. Positions reduce and tighten: with fewer players between the button and the blinds, every range widens. The positions are: UTG (which in 6-handed functions as "early position") Hijack (MP) Cutoff Button Small Blind Big Blind In 6-handed there's essentially no genuine early position: UTG plays more like the 9-handed hijack than the real UTG. Opening ranges widen at every position (a good 6-handed player can open more than 25% of hands from UTG), and the pace is much more aggressive. It's the format closest to "pure Hold'em" because every hand has more active players and fewer folds. Five common position-related mistakes 1. Playing the same hands from every seat The big one. It's tempting to think "A-10 is A-10" and play it the same from UTG as from the button. But A-10 from UTG with eight players behind is a marginal hand that loses money long-term; from the button it's a comfortable open. Start by tailoring your range to your seat. 2. Over-defending the blinds When you've been paying blinds all night and nobody's let you play anything decent, you get tempted to defend the SB with anything "because I'm already in". That's sunk-cost bias and it's exactly the bias that costs the most chips. What you've already put in isn't yours anymore: what matters is whether it's worth putting in more, not whether you have something in. 3. Underestimating the hijack Many intermediate players treat the hijack as a normal middle position. In reality it's the first useful late position and from here you can already steal, open wide, and apply pressure on the cutoff and button. Learn to use it well and you'll notice the difference. 4. Forgetting who's left behind you Your position isn't just "number of players until the button". It's also who those players are. If at UTG+1 there are two very aggressive pros behind you, you should open a narrower range than if they were two passive tourists. Theoretical position is modulated by real information about each table. 5. Thinking the button is unbeatable The button is the best seat, yes, but not unbeatable. If you open very weak hands because "I'm on the button", the blinds will 3-bet you with hands that dominate yours, and you'll see the flop with the worse pair very often. Position doesn't compensate for bad cards, it makes them slightly more playable. Frequently asked questions Which is the best position at a poker table? The button (BTN), by a wide margin. First, you paid half a forced bet and the big blind acts after you on every decision. And second, post-flop you act first of the entire table, so you decide without information on every remaining round. It's the position that loses the most chips long-term. What is the "hijack" and why is it called that? The hijack is the first late-position seat at a full table (the fourth from the button, going right). It's called that because from here, if you open with a raise, you usually make the cutoff and button fold — you "hijack" their last post-flop position, which is what they wanted to have. Does playing at a 6-player table change much? Yes, quite a bit. With fewer players between the button and the blinds, opening ranges widen at every position and the whole pace speeds up. Genuine early position basically disappears from the 9-handed format. More aggressive and faster, which many players prefer. Taking it to the table If you'd never thought about position, the most useful thing to do next time you play is pay attention to who acts before you and who after, not just your cards. You'll notice within an hour how that changes your game. Position is probably the most important poker concept after hand rankings, and curiously, it's one of the things books and videos teach late. Notice it from your first hand and you've already gained a lot. For a home game with friends, position works the same as at a pro table. The only difference is that everyone probably plays more hands than theory dictates (because you're there to have fun).
