The QiYi Warrior S is QiYi’s entry-level 3x3 (QiYi is also known as MoFangGe). It arrived as a revision of the Warrior W, with changes to the mechanism so that it turns more freely, and it has remained one of the most common budget cubes for learning.

How it works

It has no magnets, so the layers don’t settle back into place on their own at the end of each turn and precision depends on whoever’s using it. The tension (how tightly the layers are held together) is adjusted with the core screws; several users point out that it can come a little firm out of the box and that loosening it slightly improves the corner cutting (the ability to turn even when the layers aren’t fully aligned). With heavy use it tends to dry out and is worth lubricating.

Design

It’s stickerless (no stickers: the colour is in the plastic itself), so there are no stickers to peel off or wear out. It measures 55.5 mm, the standard size for a 3x3, and weighs around 77 g. The 3x3 is one of the official events of the WCA, the association that organises speedcubing competitions.

What level is it for?

It works well as a first 3x3 for learning the beginner’s method, as a cube for classes or as a spare. Anyone who wants the help of magnets can move on to a magnetic model later.
