GAN · Rubik's Cubes and Speedcubing
GAN, or GANCUBE, is a Chinese speed cube manufacturer founded in 2014 by Gan-Yuan Jiang, after whom it is named. It mainly makes high-end 3x3 cubes, Bluetooth smart cubes and puzzles for other events. Here you have the GAN V100, in Maglev and Leap versions, the GAN16 Maglev MAX and the Skewb M.
GAN's history and Maglev technology
GAN made a name for itself in speedcubing with its numbered 3x3 cubes, from the GAN 356 to the GAN12, GAN13 and beyond. In 2018 it launched its first Bluetooth smart cube, the GAN 356 i, which records your turns and connects to an app. In 2021 came the GAN12 Maglev, which brought the Maglev system to its main 3x3.
Maglev means that the tension of each layer comes not from springs but from repelling magnets. GAN describes it as more linear, quieter turning with less friction. The Leap versions use springs instead of Maglev; they are not worse, they simply feel different.
What we stock from GAN
V100
A compact 55 mm 3x3 with 72 settings. The V100 Maglev Frosted has 76 magnets and the V100 Leap Frosted uses spring tension.
IntermediateGAN16 Maglev MAX
The most complete version of the GAN16: 136 magnets, magnets between corners and core, UV coating and Maglev.
AdvancedSkewb M
The GAN magnetic Skewb, 56 mm, with adjustable spring tension and compression and magnets between core and corners.
CompetitionHow to choose a GAN cube
Your first GAN
Recommended: GAN V100 Leap, GAN V100 Maglev
For people who can already solve the 3x3 and are starting to bring their times down with CFOP. If you are not sure you will like Maglev, the Leap is the classic spring option.
Competition
Recommended: GAN16 Maglev MAX, GAN Skewb M
The GAN16 MAX is for people who already compete or train every day and want a very stable cube. The Skewb M, to add one more official event.
If you are comparing brands, our article on the best speed cubes covers GAN, MoYu and QiYi, and the 3x3 cubes category has all the models together.
GAN FAQ
What is the difference between Maglev and Leap?
Maglev uses repelling magnets to tension the layers; Leap uses springs. Both are magnetic in the sense that they have positioning magnets between pieces.
Do I need a GAN to get started?
No. To learn, a simple cube is enough, such as those by QiYi or MoYu, plus our step-by-step method. A GAN makes sense once you are timing yourself.
What is a smart cube?
A cube with sensors and Bluetooth that sends every turn to your phone to time and analyse your solves. GAN launched its own in 2018.
Where can I learn the algorithm notation?
In our guide to Rubik's Cube notation. For the Skewb, there are more models in the Skewb category.
