Escoba de 15: the Spanish fishing card game explained
Escoba is the Spanish daughter of Italian scopa: capture cards by summing exactly 15, sweep the table for bonus points and fight for the seven of coins.
Escoba de 15 is Spain's favourite «fishing» game and a direct daughter of Italian scopa: you capture cards from the table by combining them with one from your hand to sum exactly 15 (face cards count 8, 9 and 10). Clearing the table entirely is an escoba — a sweep — worth a point and marked by leaving the card face-up in your pile. At the end of each deal, points also go to whoever captured most cards, most coins, most sevens, and the most coveted card in the deck: the seven of coins, the velo. Generations of Spanish and Argentine children have learned mental arithmetic without noticing, one fifteen at a time.
