QiYi’s Gear Pyraminx brings the idea of gear cubes to the pyramid: its pieces are connected by toothed wheels, so one turn drags other parts of the puzzle along with it. This version has a black body with tiles, coloured plastic plates fitted in place of stickers.

How it works

The gears force several pieces to turn together and at different speeds, so it isn’t enough to apply what you know from the standard Pyraminx: you have to take into account how each gear advances so that everything returns to its place. Each move also produces a striking visual effect, with the wheels turning all over the pyramid.

Design

The tiles are coloured plastic pieces fitted into the black body, and they stand up to wear better than stickers. It measures about 98.5 mm and weighs about 76 g. Several users point out that it’s best to turn it with the pieces properly aligned, because if a gear is forced it can skip a tooth or lock up.
