VIN Cube · Rubik's Cubes and Speedcubing
VIN Cube is a brand of magnetic speed cubes with two families: the 3x3 cubes, from the entry-level Lite to the high-end Nova, and the 4x4 V2, in three versions depending on the number of magnets. Here you have the VIN Cube 3x3 Lite and two of the 4x4 V2 models, the Sprint and the Apex.
How VIN cubes are organised
In 3x3, VIN Cube offers several levels. The Lite is the brand's simplest model: 48 magnets, a frosted finish, about 70 g and an adjustment system with 128 combinations. Above it are the Racer and the Nova, the brand's high-end 3x3.
The 4x4 V2 is sold in three versions with the same 58 mm body: Sprint, with 96 magnets and a matte finish; Surge, with 112; and Apex, with 160, including magnets between corners and core, and a glossy UV finish. More magnets give a more guided turn; choosing between versions is mostly a matter of taste.
How to choose a VIN Cube
A 3x3 to start timing yourself
Recommended: VIN Cube 3x3 Lite
Magnetic, light and adjustable. A good step after your first non-magnetic cube. If you are learning, start with the step-by-step method and then move on to CFOP.
First magnetic 4x4
Recommended: VIN Cube 4x4 V2 Sprint
The entry version of the 4x4 V2: 96 magnets in edges and corners, no core magnets, and a more uniform feel.
High-end 4x4
Recommended: VIN Cube 4x4 V2 Apex
The most complete version, with 160 magnets and core magnets. For people who already train on the 4x4 and want stability.
VIN Cube FAQ
What is the difference between the 4x4 V2 Sprint and the Apex?
The size is the same, 58 mm. The Sprint has 96 magnets and a matte finish; the Apex has 160 magnets, magnets between corners and core and a UV finish. The Sprint, without core magnets, has a more uniform feel.
What are core magnets?
In addition to the magnets between pieces, some cubes have magnets that pull the corners towards the centre. They give more stable turning and help keep the cube from deforming during fast turns. On the 4x4 V2 the Apex has them; the Sprint does not.
Why a magnetic 4x4?
The 4x4 has no fixed centres and the inner layers easily go out of alignment. Magnets help each layer stay in place and stop the cube from popping open during fast turns. For a first 4x4, the Sprint is enough.
What is a frosted or UV finish?
Frosted is a matte, slightly rough finish; UV is a glossy, smooth coating. It is a matter of taste.
