President: the card game with a built-in social ladder
How president (scum) works: shed your cards first, claim the top rank, trade your junk for the loser's best cards — and beware the revolution.
President — also known in English as scum, capitalism or something ruder — is the shedding game with a built-in class system: the first player out becomes president, the last one gets the insulting title, and between hands the loser must hand the president their two best cards in exchange for junk. Winning breeds winning; losing means rowing uphill. It descends from Asian climbing games — China's zheng shangyou and above all Japan's daifugō, which swept that country in the 1980s — and reached the West soon after, complete with its great equaliser: the revolution, where four of a kind flips the whole card ranking upside down.
Our full guide — rules, ranks, exchanges and the house rules worth agreeing on — is in Spanish: Reglas del presidente. Group games destroy decks: a resistant one from our playing cards collection survives.
