The Maple Leaf Skewb is a modified Skewb from MoYu’s MFJS MeiLong series, launched in 2019. On the outside it keeps the cube shape, but the centres are cut into pieces that look like maple leaves and that, as well as the normal Skewb turns, allow additional moves.

How it works

It turns exactly like a Skewb: each move rotates half the puzzle around an axis that runs through two opposite corners. When the centres are aligned, you can also make a partial turn, similar to that of the Curvy Copter, which swaps three pieces of each centre. These extra degrees of freedom mix up the centres in a way that’s impossible on the classic Skewb, and solving it means putting them back as well as the corners.

Design

It’s stickerless (no stickers: the colour is in the plastic itself). Some users find the “leaf” turns a little stiff at first, and it’s best to turn precisely to avoid lock-ups; if a piece pops out, it can be put back by hand. Shops present it as suitable both for those starting out with modified Skewbs and for those who already have experience.
