Cardistry decks: cards for cuts, fans and springs

Cardistry is the art of card flourishing: one-handed and two-handed cuts, fans, spreads, displays and springs. Unlike magic, it is not about deceiving anyone but about making the movement look clean and beautiful. This category holds the cardistry decks in our Madrid warehouse: training decks, decks with backs designed for fans and editions from brands born in the cardistry scene itself, such as NOC, Fontaine, Orbit, Gemini, Cardistry Touch or The New Deck Order.

Which cardistry deck to buy for your level

To start: a classic Bicycle

The first cuts and fans can be learned with any poker-size deck in good condition. A Bicycle with a coloured back, such as the Bicycle green back or the grey and orange back versions, will do for the first few months and shows up better on video than the classic red and blue.

Cardistry training decks

Some decks are made only for practice. The Materia Deep Sea by Cardistry Touch has 51 identical cards with a rectangle on both sides, and the ESCP_THIS 2021, designed by Alex Matencio, also has 51 identical cards. The Bicycle Neon Cardistry Orange Bump removes indices and numbers so the colour is continuous.

For fans and displays

Once you have the moves down, the back becomes part of the effect. The Cardistry Fanning Yellow draws different shapes when fanned, the Palette forms pastel colour compositions, the Division has a geometric back inspired by Escher and the WTF Cardistry 2 carries letters to spell words in your fans.

Decks from cardistry brands

To practise and film with a deck from the scene: the NOC Pro 2021 Navy Blue, the Fontaine Sleight, the Orbit Christmas V2 (thin stock with an Air Cushion finish and traditional cut), the Gemini Mako Red, designed by Toomas Pintson for cardistry, or the Smoke & Mirrors 1984 Blue by Dan & Dave.

What makes a cardistry deck different from a regular deck

Any deck can be used for flourishing, but decks designed for cardistry pay attention to three things: how the back looks in motion, how the faces read in a fan and how the card stock behaves.

Back and borders

In multi-packet cuts, a thin border or a coloured frame helps each packet stand apart from the next. That is why many cardistry decks play with the borders: the Broken Borders 2019 by The New Deck Order has stripes that run from the back to the faces and create a bullseye effect when fanned, and the Broken Borders 2018 breaks the white border with a yellow and black pattern. Other decks use gradients or double-ended backs, such as the Gemini Ultra, which fill fans with colour.

Faces with or without indices

For fans and spreads, many cardists like clean faces. The Mirage V4 removes the corner indices and each card is recognised only by its pips. At the other end are the rainbow decks: the Bicycle Spectrum, created by Cosmo Solano, and the Tally-Ho Spectrum have 54 backs in different colours that form a rainbow when spread.

Stock, finish and cut

Crushed stock is pressed during manufacturing to make it thinner and more flexible, which you notice in springs and fast cuts. The finish is the surface treatment: the Air Cushion finish from the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC) is an embossing that helps the cards glide, and Cartamundi's True Linen B9 is a linen-style finish the maker developed with magicians and cardists. Marked decks and extra cards

Several decks in this category also come ready for magic. NOC Pro decks, such as the Summer NOC Pro Sunset, are marked for suit and value on the back, and many include gaff cards. It does not affect handling: it is just a bonus if you also do card magic.

Format

Almost all are standard poker size. If you want to practise anywhere, the Orbit Lil Bits V4 is a half-size mini version of the Orbit V4.

Cardistry deck brands

NOC

A line by The Blue Crown and Alex Pandrea, with a minimalist back. It has marked versions (NOC Pro) and the #MYNOC series, with designs proposed by the community, such as the MYNOC 2 Leather.

Fontaine

The brand of cardist Zach Mueller, known for its collaborations. Besides the Sleight there is the Fontaine Hey Arnold, licensed by Nickelodeon.

Orbit

Chris Brown's line, printed by USPCC. Besides the Christmas decks, there is the Tally-Ho collaboration Orbit Tally-Ho Circle Back, with its own court cards.

Cardistry Touch

The brand of Dimitri Arleri and Ladislas Toubart, focused on decks for practice and performance, such as the Materia line.

The New Deck Order

Its Broken Borders play with the borders so that packets and fans look different.

Gemini and Bocopo

Gemini is Toomas Pintson's brand (Mako, Ultra, Gemini Casino). Bocopo publishes the Steel decks and the Cardistry Fanning series.

Cardistry decks: frequently asked questions

Which cardistry deck should I buy to start?

To learn the first cuts, a standard or coloured Bicycle is enough. Once the basic moves come naturally, a practice deck such as the Materia or a NOC will let you feel the difference in stock and back design.

Can I use a regular Bicycle deck for cardistry?

Yes. Many cardists learned with one. Cardistry decks do not do the moves for you: they help them look better and, in some cases, make the deck more flexible.

What is a training deck?

A deck in which every card is the same, with a simple design, made for practising without being distracted by the faces. The Materia Deep Sea and the ESCP_THIS 2021 by Cardistry Touch are of this kind.

Why do many cardistry decks have no indices?

Because in a fan or a display the indices interrupt the artwork. Without them, the faces form a continuous image. They are not practical for playing card games.

Can I use these decks for magic?

Yes. Many include gaff cards and some, such as the NOC Pro, are marked. If you are mainly after card magic, there are more options in the magic playing cards category.

How many decks do I need?

The practical approach is one for everyday practice and another in better condition for filming. With daily practice the stock softens and the edges wear, especially on thinner decks.
