Buy playing cards online: poker, magic, cardistry and collector decks

This category holds every deck of playing cards at The Joker House: poker cards for home games, magic decks, cardistry decks, premium editions and limited runs for collectors. There are more than 500 models, and the ones shown as available are in our warehouse in Madrid, Spain, where every order ships from.

Almost everything we sell is a standard 52-card deck in poker size: 52 cards in four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs) plus the jokers, the deck many people simply call a poker deck, a French-suited deck or a deck of cards. Whether you want a deck of cards to play with, to learn magic or to give as a gift, the guide below is organised by use and names specific models.

Which deck of cards to buy, depending on what you need it for

No single deck is right for everything. Each use calls for a different finish, thickness and design, so that is the place to start.

Poker cards for home games

The red Bicycle Rider Back is the classic deck, with an Air Cushion finish. If someone at the table struggles to read the numbers, the Bee Jumbo Index has much larger indices. For heavy play on a budget, the Aviator is the economy option from the same printer.

Magic playing cards

A regular deck is all you need to start. After that come working decks such as the Phoenix by Card-Shark, marked decks such as the Butterfly Marked and gaff card assortments such as the Tally-Ho Gaff. For left-handers there is the Bicycle Ultimate Lefty, with the indices in the opposite corners.

Cardistry decks

Here the back design and the colour of the edges matter more than the court cards. From Fontaine, the brand of cardist Zach Mueller, there is the Fontaine Sleight; from Toomas Pintson, the Gemini Casino Orange; and the Materia Deep Sea by Cardistry Touch has 51 identical cards designed for practice.

Collectible playing cards

Limited and numbered runs, gilded edges and boxes with foil or embossing. For example, the Table Players series by Kings Wild Project, such as the Gilded No.13 Vol.38, the Jerry's Nugget Gilded limited to 1,000 copies or the Cherry Casino Monte Carlo, limited to 500.

Playing cards as a gift

Officially licensed decks tend to work well as gifts because they can be used to play. From theory11 there are editions of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Game of Thrones and The Beatles; from Bicycle, Disney decks such as Mickey & Friends or Stitch, and Sanrio decks such as Hello Kitty or Kuromi. You will find more ideas by recipient in which deck to give as a gift.

What makes one deck different from another

Poker size and bridge size

Both are the same height (3.5 inches, about 88 mm) and only the width changes: 2.5 inches (about 63 mm) for poker size and 2.25 inches (about 57 mm) for bridge size. Bridge size is easier to hold when you have many cards in your hand, as in bridge or canasta; for everything else, poker size is the standard. If you want a narrow deck, there is the Bicycle Bridge, and for canasta, the Bicycle Canasta, with the point value printed on each card.

Finish and card stock

Each manufacturer has its own finish: Air Cushion on Bicycle, Linoid on Tally-Ho, Cambric on Bee and True Linen B9 on many Cartamundi decks. They all aim for the same thing: cards that glide and do not stick together. Another detail you will see on product pages is crushed or thin crushed stock, pressed to make it thinner and more flexible, and the traditional cut, which many magicians prefer for the faro shuffle. Cherry Casino and Jerry's Nugget Modern Feel decks combine both.

Paper or plastic

Almost all our decks are made of card stock. Plastic decks stand up better to moisture and bending and can be wiped with a cloth, but they feel different in the hand. In plastic there is the Night Market Day and the Naughty Dog by Bacon Playing Card Company.

Who prints it

Many product pages state the printer. The most common is the United States Playing Card Company (USPCC), founded in Cincinnati in 1867 and owned by the Belgian company Cartamundi since 2019. You will also see Cartamundi, Expert Playing Card Company, WJPC or MPC. Each printer works with its own card stock, which is why the product pages list it.

Playing card brands we stock

Bicycle

Printed since 1885 and now part of USPCC. Besides the classic Rider Back it has coloured backs, such as green or gold, which are widely used in magic for colour changes.

Tally-Ho

A brand created in 1885 by Andrew Dougherty and part of USPCC since 1907. Its two classic backs are the Circle Back and the Fan Back, with a Linoid finish.

Bee

Launched in 1892 and also part of USPCC. Its borderless diamond back is the one associated with American casinos.

theory11

A publisher founded in 2007 by Jonathan Bayme. It makes decks of its own design, such as Monarchs, and official licences for Marvel, Star Wars or Harry Potter, many of them printed in the United States on FSC paper.

Kings Wild Project

The studio of illustrator Jackson Robinson, who releases many of his decks through Kickstarter. It has numbered series such as Table Players and recreations such as the Shakespeare Black.

Playing cards: frequently asked questions

Which deck of cards should I buy to start with?

A Bicycle Rider Back. It works for playing, for learning magic and for your first cardistry moves, and it is easy to replace. Once you know what interests you most, you will know which type of deck to go for next.

How many cards are in a poker deck?

52 cards, 13 in each suit, plus the jokers, which are usually two. Many decks add an extra card, either an advertising card or a gaff card for magic, so the box may hold 54, 55 or 56. It is explained in how many cards are in a deck.

What is a premium deck?

A deck with its own design from start to finish and finishes a standard deck does not have: metallic inks, foil, an embossed box or painted edges. Many come out in limited runs.

Do you sell the Spanish deck?

This category is for French-suited decks. If you are interested in the Spanish deck, with coins, cups, swords and clubs, there is a complete guide covering its history, suits and games.

Which deck works for playing and for collecting?

Casino cards, that is, casino-style decks such as Cherry Casino or Jerry's Nugget, and the Table Players series by Kings Wild Project: they have classic court cards and are easy to read at the table, but they come out in limited editions.
